How do I take off the 172 steering wheel.. anyone done it before ? does the airbag cover just pop off or what ?

Theres 2 screws on the back of the wheel, undo these to take the airbag off and then you need a bigger torx socket to remove the large bolt in the middle, then just pull the wheel off.

When I did it i disconnected the battery as well just in case. Quite a simple job to do.

Thanks John.

So when I remove the 2 screws at the back the center bit (including the plastic cover) will come off ?

Dont spose you remember what size the torx bolt in the middle was ?

WHAT? there arent any screws at the back of the steering wheel..... :-S

You release two clips at the back end of the wheel, one on either side, as you release them pull the centre unit (which includes the airbag) forward, itll just pop out, then you have to undo the airbag wiring, easy, just pop the top off the connector and it then comes out dead easy....

Then use a HUGE socket and some force to remove the centre nut... and erm.... well... anything that is needed.....

Nah you cant just replace the grips... when I phoned up renault wanted £250 for the steering wheel, which I ofcourse told them where to ctick it :)

Got one of e-bay for £56 lol, if its in immaculate condition like it should be I will be replacing my one with the split rubber grips.

Although I have to say they aint anywhere as bad as opticals wheel !
