Removing 172 Inlet Manifold

  Audi TT 225
I want to remove my mk1 172 inlet manifold this weekend.

1) Does anyone know the cost of new gaskets?
Am I correct in assuming theres one at the TB end, one in the centre and one at the head?

2) Is there anything I should be aware of when doing this Im not familiar with the engine yet Ive only had the car since monday?

Is there like a haynes manual for the 172 or similar? Its not covered in the haynes clio one so I thought its a waste of cash buying it...

Thanks chapps!

This is a b*****d of a job due to the size of the engine and the engine bay!! you dont really need to replace the gaskets, i didnt anyway!!!

to make your life easier you need to remove the from slam panel where the bonnet lock is, everything else is quite easy apart from the aux belt tensioner.

Its quite easy just abit time and knuckle consuming!!!!

How come your removing it?

Well I read the inlet manifold sucks (no pun intended) so I want to get it off and check it out to see how it can be improved and eye up the port differences. Ive done some porting work in the past so Im just interested to see whats what....

Whats the deal with the belt tensioner mate?

its easy
undo the plug leads
undo the two sensors either side of the manifold
undo the throttle possision sensor
undo the 2 10mm bolts at the back near the coil pack
undo the 6 10mm bolts at the front on the runners
undo the elbow
pull it off
theres a metal gasket where the top manifold connects to the bottom half and a rubber seal underneith where the oil breather is and a rubber seal on the throttle body and thats it

bottom half
remove the fuel rail protector (2x 10mm bolts) down the holes deep socket will get these
remove the 2 bolts there like a threaded bar sticking out this is what holds the protector on the block
then there are 7 bolts holding the lower half of the manifold on 4 are 13mm and 3 are 16mm
you will also need to unplug the injectors and if you want to un hook the rail from the lower part of the inlet manifold which is held on with 2 10mm bolts.
this lower manifold has a metal gasket which wont need replacing unless you bend it etc

^^^^

Big job to do. I ended up taking the engine mount off the drivers side to jack the engine up a fair bit to get into all the bolts.

I wouldnt put old gaskets back on myself. For the sake of a few quid get them replaced.

you can do it without removing the mount, just gotta tease it a bit
i could pm him a guide if he wants, you want one rich?

  Audi TT 225
Sounds straight forward enough but if you could send me a guide too that would be brilliant mate. (just in case lol)
You guys are really helpful cheers!!! Cant wait to get this puppy appart I love exploring a new engine lol
May as well stick some magnecor's on while Im at it.

I dont re-use gaskets if I can help it ;)

its easy, no need to renew gaskets

1hour job

Errrrrm yes if you have done it before and have a armory of tools...

RichMcc, i wouldnt bother taking it apart for that reason, your best off going to BenR ^ it would be much more worth your while.

its all 10mm/13mm bolts IIRC no special tools needed

You are always best to replace the gaskets associated with the inlet as they are crush gaskets. The inlet to head is 77 00 109 906 and retails at £2.65 plus vat. the plenumn to inlet is 77 00 114 203 and retail price is £ 4.16 plus vat. Is it realy not worth replacing them at that price after all the work you have gone to or best to just slap them back on with a bit of silicone?

Exactly. Friend of mine who's a mechanic said he always replaces gaskets in such situations - they cost peanuts so while you've got the thing in bits you might as well renew them!

Thread revival I know- but probably beyond me replacing top and bottom, so whats sort of price should I be looking at getting someone else to do it?
