Removing a starter on a 172 cup

has anyone removed a starter on a clio 172 cup and had any problems, does the drive shaft have to be removed, i done mine today and had to take the driveshaft out to get the starter out, is there any easier way to do this, and can i test the starter before replacing it as the car will not start, when i turn the ignition it fails to turn over

last time i did one, must have been about 2 years ago i removed the drive shaft, makes it alot easier.

u can put 12v straight to the starter but i dont like doing it tbh
