Renault 5 Evolution

  Renault 5 Turbo
Alright fella's, I haven't posted on here for a while now, but thought I'd share my little project that has been progressing over the past couple of years, I hope you guys like it.

It started out as a standard R5 campus which I used for a while and to be honest was a fantastic little machine. Then after much head scratching on what type running gear to use I decided on an Evo5 engine mated to escort cosworth running gear.

We came to this conclusion because I still wanted to retained some of the rear of the car so an engine in the back went in the bin. Front engine rear wheel drive would work but because the rear of a 5 is made of tinfoil there is no real weight over the back to aid traction. So I went with AWD in the end.

We did think about using the full Mitsubishi running gear, but the final engine position would mean that the engine would sit forward of the front axle and very close to the front of the car, meaning that possibly the radiator would have to be mounted in the rear making the car impractical to use on the road I.e. Fan noise and loss of the boot.

So we thought (we being me and Dave Plant from DJM) that an evo engine fitted to escort cosworth running gear would be good, because we could place the front differential in front of the engine, therefore setting the engine further back in the bulkhead and lower into the chassis.

Now I know you CS boys like your pictures so I'll let them do the rest of the talking.

So this is how the car is now. We dropped the car off to get some of the next jobs underway, fuel system, exhaust, pretty much everything to complete a full dry build, before stripping it down for painting and powder coating. Thank you for your help @Meek_racing

Cheer for looking guys, any questions fire away, and I'll keep it updated as and when I can

Absolutely mad if this gets finished, reminds me of the Subaru Clio on here!

On another note, looks like it was a decent shell to start with, but I was surprised to see that a drivers seat fitted in after that cage and new box section made!

Love the ?XXR's they look HUGE though on the 5 lol

Yes the shell was solid, and it is a bit tight, but Dave package the car well. The driving position is perfect with a great field view, that was one of the big turning points in the build to get that spot on.

What's the plan for this car? The stance says track slag, but you mentioned 'using on the road' earlier?

Yes mate it'll be road legal, but capable being used on track. I used to have a track only bike which was a great bit of kit, but on nice sunny mornings it killed me thinking I couldn't take it out for a blast, so I thought balls to that I'm not doing that again, ha :yum:

That is absolutely class.

Cheers mate

Hero. No other words

Thank you sir

Cheers for the comments boys, and yes my Mrs is very understanding :innocent:

The spec of the engine will be 2.0 long rod conversion, with Kelford 272 cams and a TD05 turbo from a Evo X. A similar spec engine ran 450hp/460lbft. So with the car coming in at AROUND the 1000kilo mark it will make for a fun drive :smilingimp::smilingimp:

The drivetrain will have a big tooth gear kit fitted, Quaife ATB up front and a standard viscious diff at the rear.

Quite often, I cringe at the overuse of the word epic..........but n this case, nothing else quite matches my thoughts on this.

had a friend who had a yellow wide bodied 4wd cosworth powered fiesta built back in 96 (got some photo's of it being built somewhere). It was built at DJM motorsport in Ollerton near Newark, we used to spend all weekend down there working on it (kind of helping out to keep costs down).

Dave the guy who ran DJM was a genius and his engineering and welding skills were epic. From memory I'm sure he had something to do with a few private builds for McRae.

My mate got his fiesta 90% finished then sold it to buy a house.....boring b*****d.

EPIC!!!!!

Thank you

This will be a great toy.
Good luck with it.

It is true, as men get older toys become more expensive.

Awesome but the size of those wheels ruins it. Ridiculous.

Fair point sir, but the brakes that I wanted to run on the front were 330mm so practically had to go with a 17" wheel, plus deploying 460lbft torque required a decent size tread.

My God!

That's bloody awesome!

Thank you

Actual lol. What a job.

You're not going to need any interior heater with that gearbox positioning! lol.

Lol you say that, there will be a little heater but purely for demisting the screen, I did look into a heated screen, but the company would only do a minimum of ten

Yep Dave did all the chassis work, his knowledge and skill are fantastic, and is a no Bulls£&t guy, if it ain't gonna work he won't do it.

Yes he developed the McRae rally car nice piece of kit.

Dis gon' be good.

Cliopreza is getting a new engine now as well so it really will be a clash of the titans for ultimate CS build.

The Cliopreza is an awesome piece of kit look forward to seeing it with the new engine in.
