Renault Mégane R.S. Trophy-R 2019 Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record

We do live in an age of collectors and speculators, so maybe it will this time. If it had a Ford or BMW badge on it, it would sell out in an instant.

Makes you wonder if the bubble will burst at some point and the more fringe stuff will plummet in value.

Happened a while back with Classics didn't it??

Oh yeah, missed that bit [emoji23]

Impressive stuff for a boggo tyre then, Unless they have had a specific compound made similar to Cup2 R etc

It does yes, but to do it in a FWD hot hatch on sticky tyres takes considerably less balls/skill than doing it in something RWD imho.

The lap time is very impressive, but it all just leaves me a little cold now ive done a couple of trackdays in something other than the Mini.

Interesting this. I get what you're saying but, in rallying circles, some people seem to struggle to get the best out of FWD cars. I definitely agree that pedaling a powerful RWD car takes balls but, when it comes to skill, getting a front-driver to really work (especially when not on a race track) can be a real challenge.

Regardless, driving anything absolutely balls-out around the 'ring takes bigger balls and far more skill than I have ?

48,000 pounds? What the f**k?

It's a lot, but the RS3 (and your car actually) were both pretty pricey new. The RS3 starts at about £45k, the A45 started at around £41k. Obviously they have a way more premium badge but, given the limited-run of the Megane, plus some of the fancy parts it sounds like it will have, I don't think it's perhaps as expensive as it first sounds.

Only a handful will be brought to the UK, so it only requires a few people with bags of money who want a rare/collectible car. Previous uber Meganes have struggled a bit, so it's going to be interesting to see how this one fairs.

Mine from the showroom was actually the same price. But there are genuine reasons why you wouldn't pay that much money for a Renault. That gearbox doesn't sound like it's up to many more laps, for one lol. Certainly a lot more fun to drive, that is no question - but enjoyment doesn't really equate to quality in this context

Still, at least it'll likely hold value....ish

Oh there are genuine reasons if you look at it subjectively, but the collector car segment is far from subjective  They've struggled in the past, but car speculators and those willing to fork out for limited edition are plenty in number, so who knows.

It's mega money and way beyond what I would spend on this sort of car, but I wouldn't be surprised if they sold them all.

They will sell, no question. R26R values are quite eye watering at the moment, too.

What are the values of the 275 Trophy R like now? cos thats the best benchmark really.

That too set a record lap round the Nurburgring when it was released, again with a limited run of 250 models.

Ktec have one for about £27k. There is one on eBay for £29k.

Pretty decent then, £36,450 new without extras. The Nurburgring record pack was another 2 grand ontop.

These track special prices are getting pretty ridiculous. Look at the last three versions and adjust for inflation:

Megane R26.R - £30,132 (£22,990 in 2008, plus a few grand for the exhaust)
Megane Trophy-R - £42,287 (£38,450 in 2014 from R3k1355's figures above)
and now a rumoured £48k?

I know I'm not forced to buy them, so why should I care etc., but I think I'd rather they put the effort in on the base model. Look at the Civic for which the ring spec car is basically the same as the normal mass produced road spec Type-R and costs a lot less than this.

The base price Trophy is over 31 grand tho, nearly £32,000.

Yes though it would be good for some of the options to be available for the standard Megane, the exhaust, wheels and tyres. Maybe even the suspension and brakes?

Yeah but that wouldn't entirely solve the problem (in my opinion of course). If you're buying a normal Trophy new, then adding £2k of exhaust option will crucify you on the PCP as it will essentially have no GFV so you pay the full £2k yourself over the PCP deal. At the other end, if you're trying to pick one up second hand, you're now spending months scouring the classifieds for the unicorn spec car you want. At least with the Civic, it's all their in the standard package and you're not missing out.
For all those ultra-expensive options, they've had to pay out money to get them TUV certified / tested etc. which I'd argue they could have better spent on the base spec car.

Everything has a part number unless they can't sell it openly to non Trophy R owners.

Isn't that something that's been widely debated? Talk of sticky tyres etc. Not really relevant to the point I know, but thought I'd throw it out there lol

Good luck actually getting hold of some of the parts even with the numbers though, there's stuff that says available but with no timescale or anything on the system

Not that the MK3 had that many special parts anyway [emoji1787]

Yeah, there are trust issues with any ring time and the Civic did come in for some stick. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Renault's approach in general (that's why I bought a Megane, that and because you told me to) I just don't like the arms race where more and more effort is spent on super limited number special editions and/or crazy expensive optional parts, instead of working of the basics.

In a world where electric is imminent I think its great that car companies like Renault are doing this kind of thing. So it's a 3rd generation 'clubsport' type 'limited edition' they've done, who's to say that the next Trophy might even be a hybrid or all electric version.... Look at the Zoe photos doing the rounds with a supposed 400hp.

Let Renault have their 5 minutes ??

Not sure it will go full EV, but the next R.S. Megane will have some sort of hybrid tech in it at the very least, 100%. A lot of OEMs are going to start introducing mild hybrid systems to try and keep legislators happy, so I think sporting models will be ripe for it.

Megane face-lift has been announced as a hybrid version in the range for next year, I think they're doing it to the Clio face-lift first this year.

The carbon wheels are £4500. Each! I'll take mine with standard trophy wheels then. That makes the R cheaper than the regular trophy?.
