So, why did my exhaust heatshield come loose, and come to rest on my exhaust then?

I would have thought that on a modern car, such things are well secured to the body - to random bits dropping-off on the motorway etc.

It might not seem dangerous at first, but I'm a biker .. and road debris is a killer!

A bolt/screw fell-out... (couldn't have been put-in correctly).

Superglue would have been better!
