Resetting MK2 172 ECU????

Does anyone know if disconnecting the battery will reset and clear any ghosts / fault codes from the ECU on a MK2 172 or do I need it to be reset by renault?

Nope, depending on the faults it'll need to go on a clip computer to be cleared or some can be cleared with a normal obd2 interface/reader.
