Results of this weeks Autocar 182 Test

Brief summary

For those that like their figures first (Car had 1700 miles on it)

0-60 in 6.3

0-100 in 17.0 (0.1 slower than a Cup according to Autocar ie sod all)

30-70 in 5.8

Dont like the aging roots of the car, crap driving position (100% with them on that) and refinement

Do like. Handling, peformance etc. Prefer it to the overated Cooper S (I am an ex Cooper s owner)

"But perhaps most importantly, the Clio offers more fun. It may lack refinement, not to mention a decent driving position, but this is a hot hatch in the classic vein, mating diminutive proportions and agility with sports-car shaming grip and performance"

Right:

The 182 has wider cross section tyres and traction control! = quicker to 60
The cup is quicker to 100 because of gearing and narrower tyres, hence less rolling resistance
and no i am not; a Cup is the fastest car in the world owner

quarter mile in 15 is quick right? (Im not being a tart, I just never look at the quarter mile figures usually!) How does this compare to others?

its not bad. some std cups do it a bit more under 15sec.

this car still has 1751miles on it remeber.

Impressive 0-60 time (better/wider tyres at a guess) with the 0-100 & 1/4 mile times is just as I expected it to be, i.e. near as damn it identical to a Cup!

Power-to-weight ratio is basically the same though, so there was never gonna be a huge difference anyway, this just confirms it.

Anyone still got the Autocar figures for the Cup?!

Time for a drive in a 182 me thinks...

Given the fact that autocar themselves said that they had never had a 172 as fast as the original one they had from renault on test, Id take these figures with a pinch of salt until people here have their cars run in and timed properly.

If these figures are correct (as in, not a car supplied by renault for magazines to test) then thats pretty impressive and more worrying is that it makes the V6 look even lardier (in terms of performance, obviously the V6 looks way cooler).

if you are right, then the 172 cup they had on test would also be special which would make it even though?

Nice, I like it.

Imagine a stripped out 182 Cup with traction control!!!!!! Now that would have been the absolute bolx!!!!

The Cup always needed traction control for better launches - would have made tyres last double the time!!!

Cracking times to be fair. Not all 182s are going to be the same, there will be slower but there will be faster too. Good to see those sorts of times tho with less than 2000 miles on the clock !

If only they did the 182 in the Yellow for cheaper than they do at the moment I would just have to have one !

My Cup with back seats removed and R Sport ECU did a 14.4, with the mods im getting fitted this week I hope to get a even lower 14 hopefully 14.1 like Chris. If the 182 does 0-60 in 6.3 it must be really running out of gas to take 15.0 to get to the 1/4 mile.

Thats what I said, autocar said that their Mk.1 172 "was a freak" (or words to that effect), which kind of leads me to believe that renault are supplying tweaked cars to magazines for review, Im not doubting the fact that the 182 is faster than the 172, if it isnt then theyve done something wrong, all Im saying is that 6.3 seconds sounds far too quick, and until we see real figures from cars here Id be inclined to say that something fishy is going on. (Esp with the their 182 being so close in performance to the V6).

On the other hand if tests here prove it to be true then renault have well and truly grabbed back the king of hot hatches crown and deserve a big pat on the back.

I will however reserve judgement until I see the figures from non-renault supplied test cars ;)

The mk1 was sh*t slow!! it posted an 8.2 (to 60mph) sec test time then the SAME CAR posted a 6.6sec 0-60 at the 0-100-0 test later on that year. (i was there)

Man you have no idea what you are talking about.

What do you expect them to do to it anyway? fabricate a new exhaust? fit nos? NO! there is no way they could tweak it.

That car supplied but the company that runs the press cars for the office had done 200miles when supplied to evo and has been with autocar and them ever since.

I assure you that the press cars are not "tweaked"
may not be tweaked but I have noticed it has a cup splitter but no cup spoiler pack as it has the Sat-Nav so you cant have the rear cup spoiler.

Its funny that I noticed that as mine arrived with a cup spoiler pack but without the front splitter!

Hmmm, looks to me like I have found my missing splitter, bloody press car stole it!

I thought it was an early production LHD car that posted the crap time!

stromba give it up ,why cant you accept that a car can do this, what have autocar got to loose.i think its sour grapes cos now your way behind in 0002

just moove on

If this fwd clio can do 6.3 to 60 then doesnt this blow your aurgument out the water for sunny gtirs doing 5.4-60,remember they have 4wd and 220 bhp as standard and cant be that much heavier than a clio.Likr they say the mk1 was slow so why fluff this one up.I always believed them to be honest journos

well done to the clio

Stromba is just upset cos his precious little willy (and balls) is not the best renault hot hatch anymore!

Yeah it starts to get funny when stromba replies to anything ;) but then these journos are wrong arent they.... Williams being their 5th best drivers car.....

Think a magazine should recruit someone off here for their unbiased well educated views.... A clarkson in the making :D

Well spotted on the spoiler front. The original idea was to offer the front and rear spoiler separately. The press cars were ordered with Carminat and front spoiler (the rear not being available with satnav). Subsequently we decided to offer the spoilers combined, hence the spec today.
