Right new setup for the car...

So having just got my Byzanz Orange (copper coloured) E36 M3 in the last couple of days i'm looking to refresh my detailing kit as its a couple of years old and probably past it. Pretty much i'm asking you guys whats best for an average clean down to the small things like...

Sponges/wash mitts,
Buckets with grit guards,
Shampoo,
Polish and wax with microfibres to go with them,
Leather cleaner,
Chamois leathers

People recommend a Karcher also, if so which one and what shampoo to compliment it?

Any help would be much appreciated, i'll more than likely be using I4Detailing however if there is anything you guys prefer on different websites then link away.

Cheers
Nick

For leather u want gliptone cleaner & conditioner, i then use a chemical guys bucket with grit guard, lambs wool wash mit & some chem guys shampoo (cant remember what). Also use a halfords pressure washer.

Then have mequires clay & quick detailer, followed AG super resin polish & wax. Got a DAS-6 with menzerna & 3M pads for sarahs TT ...

Use some wonder drying towel to dry, along with a proper leather chamois.

Tyres i use turtle wax stuff, does the job. Windows are done with windowlene :)

Sponges/wash mitts, Any Lambs wool mitt http://www.i4detailing.co.uk/acatalog/Megs_Lambswool_Wash_Mitt_1.html
Buckets - Any Clear bucket, Grit Guards are a waste of time IMO eg: http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/pb-clear-wash-bucket-cat3.html
Shampoo, - http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/auto-finesse-lather.html
Polish - By Hand or DA? By Hand this has been getting good reviews, but BMW Paint IIRC is hard so you may have your work cut out - http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/auto-finesse-tripple-cat9.html by DA the 3M Range or Menzerna range.
wax - How bigs your wallet? for winter Ill be using either my trusty FK1000p or http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/auto-finesse-tough-coat.html rather than a Wax.
microfibres - Costco do a big bundle for £15 which are pretty good
Leather cleaner - Cant help here as never had Leather
Chamois leathers - Its not the 1980's anymore http://www.i4detailing.co.uk/acatalog/I4D_Uber_Blue_Drying_Towel_1.html

Karcher - Personally I prefer my nilfisk C120

Cheers for the heads up Jay, would you use that shampoo also with a snow foam or is there a specific type of shampoo?

Sorry to sound like a complete schoolboy when it comes cleaning. I haven't cleaned a car properly in years so need a helping hand! Ha

TBH mate, I wouldn't bother with snow foam, it's just a 'fun step' rather than of any benefit.

A blast with the pressure washer to rinse the car off will do as much if not more than a good snow foam.

Utter rubbish, don't go giving out advice like that. Snow foaming the vehicle assists massively in the safe washing process(s). The other day I jet washed my van then snow foamed it, then when I jet washed it after the amount of dirt that was coming off was amazing. As most avid detailers know.... The cleaner you can make the paintwork before physical contact the better.

Each to their own, personally I see no need for the best part of £50 on a lance, plus cost of foam, which is why I sold mine on.

Snow Foam IMO (Note - In My Opinion) is a waste of time and money, both which could be better invested in the purchase of a decent TFR / Degreasing agent and it's application.

Like Grit Guards, yes you 'can' use one, or two in your wash process but if you have a decent process to start you shouldn't 'need' to use them.

Opinions are one thing but facts can't be argued against.
yes having a snow foam lance and snow foam isn't a 'must have' product if you just want to keep your car clean each week, however if you are looking to try and keep it in as good a state as possible and or are dabbling with alot of the 'detailing' processes then it's a extremely important tool in your arsenal

Okay well what do you recommend as a complete setup? My budget is going to be tops £500 but want everything down to little things like a few spare applic. pads etc.

If you want you can pm me, it would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Im not going to bother debating with you as everyone has opinions, I would point out though the comment about 'Utter Rubbish' is again is only opinion as many respected detailers hold the same / simalar views as me....

Likewise there are many who hold the same opinion as you, each to their own.

I only have and use a Snow Foam Lance because people expect it to be used, because its in 'the process' as seen in threads on here and DW!

In reality, it does very little that a pressure washer alone doesn't do. If its 'wax safe' then its not going to have a lot of cleaning power, as you'd be having a negative effect on the protection of your car. Up the cleaning power (TFR's etc) and your car will be clean from a touchless wash... but that wax you spent 30 mins applying last week, will be all but gone. A few products seem to be getting closer to the balance between cleaning power and being 'wax safe' such as Autobrite Magi Foam, but they need trialling for a longer period before I'd personally recommend them.

Back to the OP's question, I'd say you put off purchasing a Snow Foam lance for now, but a pressure washer is a must IMO!

I would disagree with putting off buying a lance. Mine comes in ultra handy for the 3 monthly wax strip. Filled with G101, covers the car, fresh start. £500 to spend will sort a proper detailing kit.

Nick, I can really add to the products above. That age of BMW is still likely to have hard paint, so go for a medium to hard paint kit for correction.

Clay, quick detailers, wax and polishes are all very personal. I love the Menzerna range. Gally likes 3M. Russ likes his Scholl. Try Menz as I found it was the best for beginners.

Menzerna plays up in Winter though...

If the budget is £500, then yep get a lance, but if it's £100 or so, I'd deprioritise it and go for a citrus degreaser via a pressure sprayer

Agreed but the warm water bath trick always sorts it for me. Plus I don't tend to advise new detailers to detail in winter. That's saved for the likes of you and I russ!!

Indeed! I have full access to a dedicated unit now too, so no more slipping over on my arse thanks for iced up snow foam for me this year! :)

  Megane R26
It's in Shropshire... bit of a drive for me, but its a great unit!

I may get something myself next year...

  Bumder With A Buffer
Ah frozen foam. How I miss that...

Anyway, new unit you say? Where abouts mate?

During the cold snap earlier on in the year I used autobrites magifoam stuff. It stayed on my driveway for about a month afterwards
