Road tax question - SORRY

sorry guys but im not too smart when it comes to these stuff and I've never bought road tax before .. the previous owners tax is still in use. My mate said to me today that i have to change mine?? I said i thought u only have to change it when it runs out? he said no the new law u have to change it asap. if thats the case how much do i pay for a 172 ph1?

tax is paid for until the date on the disc mate, thats when you pay the new increased amount. Makes me happy I bought 12 months instead of 6 this month
