R26
I've been rolling with a stripped car and buckets for a while, and as I got my bonus a few weeks ago I decided to treat the car to its last mod - after this it won't be touched, just enjoying it on as many trackdays as I can.
I decided to go for the Custom Cages one, it's the CL4 kit if you want to see it on their site.
After ordering it, I asked about lead times, and they told me about 4 weeks, which was what I was expecting. But I ordered it on a Friday, the following Thursday I got a call to say it will despatched tomorrow, and with me on Monday - awesome!!
So that weekend I went out to get some supplies to spray it. Yes....spray it before it gets welded in the car. I know this wasn't the best way to go about it, but I'd rather have some colour to it than bare metal....
So after a trip to Halfords...... (I thought this would be enough!)
I thought a nice bright orange would be a cool contrast to my Arctic Blue car.
Then, as they said, on the Monday it was delivered. (this isn't all of it)
So to spray it I came up with the idea of hanging the bars from the garage structure, that way I can spray all of it without anything getting in the way.
I did about half of the whole cage at a time.....so next was the main loop and other bits:
As I said before, I thought six cans of orange would be enough......oh no. That did about half of the cage. This particular orange spray needs at least FOUR coats to look proper....so I bought a fair few more cans of that!
So I just finished that today, and I've got to load it all up in the car for my trip to Bedford to visit Danny at 519 Automotive. He's a cracking bloke who I've met a fair few times, and he was more than happy to do the job. He even bought a new welder just for the job!
So this evening I laid it all out and called upon my tetris skills to find a way to fit everything in!
About an hour later......all in!
So tomorrow I make the journey to Danny's....and just over a week later I'll be picking it up.....can't wait!
Oh.....and while all that spraying was going on, I had to make a few mods to the car to get the cage to fit as this isn't a dash dodger.
Dash removal:
The easy bit.....
The not so easy bit.....
The surprisingly easy bit.....
I visited bomber's house too for a bit more strippage and wire tidying.
A bit tidier:
.....and a few neat little mods (in my opinion )
AC controls: (which I can just about reach with harnesses on!)
ESP button:
Thanks Dave and Adey for the help with the last bit!
So just the cage to be welded in, and hopefully I can source a MK1 dash to finish it off (the reflections in the windscreen are annoying at times!)
PS. I know painting it before welding it in isn't ideal....BUT I'm hoping it will not be that bad around the joints....if it's a complete mess I'll touch it up after.
I'll update this when it's all done and fitted.........
