Roll Cage - It's about time!

I've been rolling with a stripped car and buckets for a while, and as I got my bonus a few weeks ago I decided to treat the car to its last mod - after this it won't be touched, just enjoying it on as many trackdays as I can.

I decided to go for the Custom Cages one, it's the CL4 kit if you want to see it on their site.

After ordering it, I asked about lead times, and they told me about 4 weeks, which was what I was expecting. But I ordered it on a Friday, the following Thursday I got a call to say it will despatched tomorrow, and with me on Monday - awesome!!

So that weekend I went out to get some supplies to spray it. Yes....spray it before it gets welded in the car. I know this wasn't the best way to go about it, but I'd rather have some colour to it than bare metal....

So after a trip to Halfords...... (I thought this would be enough!)

I thought a nice bright orange would be a cool contrast to my Arctic Blue car.

Then, as they said, on the Monday it was delivered. (this isn't all of it)

So to spray it I came up with the idea of hanging the bars from the garage structure, that way I can spray all of it without anything getting in the way.

I did about half of the whole cage at a time.....so next was the main loop and other bits:

As I said before, I thought six cans of orange would be enough......oh no. That did about half of the cage. This particular orange spray needs at least FOUR coats to look proper....so I bought a fair few more cans of that!

So I just finished that today, and I've got to load it all up in the car for my trip to Bedford to visit Danny at 519 Automotive. He's a cracking bloke who I've met a fair few times, and he was more than happy to do the job. He even bought a new welder just for the job!

So this evening I laid it all out and called upon my tetris skills to find a way to fit everything in!

About an hour later......all in!

So tomorrow I make the journey to Danny's....and just over a week later I'll be picking it up.....can't wait!

Oh.....and while all that spraying was going on, I had to make a few mods to the car to get the cage to fit as this isn't a dash dodger.

Dash removal:

The easy bit.....

The not so easy bit.....

I visited bomber's house too for a bit more strippage and wire tidying.

A bit tidier:

.....and a few neat little mods (in my opinion ;))

AC controls: (which I can just about reach with harnesses on!)

Thanks Dave and Adey for the help with the last bit! :)

So just the cage to be welded in, and hopefully I can source a MK1 dash to finish it off (the reflections in the windscreen are annoying at times!)

PS. I know painting it before welding it in isn't ideal....BUT I'm hoping it will not be that bad around the joints....if it's a complete mess I'll touch it up after.

I'll update this when it's all done and fitted.........

lol....it was as blue as the car. That's what they look like after a while.

It's the same one as everyone else has I assure you.

It looked awesome when it was first fitted, matched the car's colour great....then it just gradually faded away :(

Still one of the best mods you can do to a Clio though!

Nice stripping, how much was the cage? Proper ghetto relocation going on with the ac :rasp:

Thanks.

It was £595 delivered, and that's with 2x 1.5m extra bars. I will definitely need one of those for the harness bars, as it doesn't have them as standard. I doubt I'll need the other one.

Suprised they let you have it like that, when I went to look about getting one, they said they would need to see an example of welding from whoever was doing the job.Knobs.

Really?! Jay said you visited them and you weren't that impressed with their attitude.

I had no issues, just picked up the phone and spoke to some lady in the office (I presume) and placed the order.

Thats what I mean, bad attitude, then proceeded to tell me I would die if we stayed with our OMP cage, his parting comment was "well it's your life." Toss Pott.

Yeh Jay told me that lol!

He also said you thought their kits looked very good though, I'd rather have an awesome cage from miserable people than a crappy cage from the nicest people in the world.

Cages did look fantastic, and the welding was the best I have ever seen, actually looked like it had been done with mastic, very neat.

Dropped the car off at Danny's today. Now for the long boring wait....

While I'm here, where's the best place to get roll cage padding? Tweeks want £48 to deliver four 1m lengths. That seems a bit extravagant for 4m of padding. Anywhere else good? Just normal stuff, doesn't have to be FIA approved.

I don't think it is, but don't quote me on that. There was a piece of paper that came with it about that, didn't really pay much attention to it tbh as I'm not worried if it's not approved, only for track day use.

Although on their site they say this:

No FIA documentation available for Club Kits.

i "think" from what i made out from the website you have to supply a sample of your welding and then send it off to be approved, then they will issue a certificate

Ah that makes sense from what I read on that sheet. So I assume if you take the finished cage to them, they inspect it and give the thumbs up....or not.

Ah, Tony, I though you meant they would only SELL you a kit when they had seen example of the work from the person welding it in, didn't realise that was related to the approval bit.

^Have a fight!

looks mint dan, glad I could help with the wiring. 'where can we put this panel then?' 'oh it fits here, get some self tappers'. Lol

Have fun at work this week dude!

well it makes sense, the welding is the most important part!

Woohoo! It's 99% done. I'm picking it up tomorrow. Danny's just got to tidy up some of the welds, and we'll probably fiddle about with a few things when I get there.

As it is now :)

A bit of advice needed:

Now I knew before I sprayed the cage that Danny would have to remove bits before he welded, so you can clearly see this at the joins. What's the best way to touch this up? Spray over it?

If I tried to primer and spray just those areas (or as close as I can) would that work? Bearing in mind in I would also be spraying over the existing orange paint (which has been lacquered too)

So what to do?

  Titanium 182
Rough back the areas where it's been welded then start as you did, primer, blow over with the base coat (ensuring you're blowing over existing paint to blend it in) then laquer just the same. Should be fine :)

Looks awesome btw!

That's what I had in mind, just wasn't sure if there's a better way.

I'll mask off as much of the orange cage bit as I can, so I only overlap a tiny bit.
