rttam's flame red 172 project

booked another day at combe ready to try out my new suspension and wheels/tyres.
we had been having a real dry spell so was going to be awesome. unfortunately last minute it was predicted to poor down so stuck to running the 16"s with the ad08r on and trekked up to combe.
still had a great day overtaking a lot of cars and really pushing the wet capabilities of the car. had a couple of big slides but kept it on the black stuff and was really impressed with the ad08r in the wet. again the car was faultless and made it home in one piece

next up we were on holiday in truro for a few days and whilst messing about on facebook i found these wheels up for sale cheap just around the corner from our hotel so went and picked them up. gave them a quick rattle can refurb and whacked the ns2r i had lying around from the orange wheels onto them.
detailed the car and took it to a local car show got bored after 2 hours and came home remember why i dont bother with car shows anymore lol.

next up i took the car back to llandow for another track day.
in the morning i was trying to push the car far too hard for the little track hence this awesome photo but after a few hours practise my lines were much better.
i couldnt work out afterwards why my drivers side skirt was scratched until i saw this photo of my car attacking a cone lol

booked another day at combe. finally a full dry dry day here!
set off out the gate a bit too hard on the first session and had quite a fast off at quarry on my 5th lap.
i hit the edge of the rumble strip quite hard which resulted in a buckled wheel and flat tyre, luckily i managed to just miss the crash barrier and just run along the grass.
i headed back into the pits to assess the damage and change my underpants!
after reinflating the tyre and swapping the wheels front to rear i was back out on track with no other damage luckily.
had a passenger lap with a lovely guy called rob in his insane evo which blew my mind and he also gave me some great tips.
really enjoyed the rest of the day improving my driving skills. was quite an eventful afternoon though my abs packed up but then started working again, my go pro died and my dash cam started playing up. i had a very scary slide coming around camp corner pretty fast after overtaking civic which luckily i managed to hold (the guy in the civic did compliment me on holding it so well after which i was quite chuffed about).
i got in some pretty decent laps in the last session and set off home with the car surprisingly still in one piece and a huge grin on my face

gave the car one last drive for the year and cleaned it all up.

after having a couple of near misses on the last track day at combe i decided my bolt in half cage needed an upgrade and i decided as i barely use the car on the road anymore to lose as much weight as possible.
i stripped the entire interior, lost the radio and anything else that wasnt needed, fitted a cm dash pod and some flat door cards this is currently how the car is sitting in my garage

i also have @Tom Johnson at fulcrum motorsport building me a full cage as we speak. i was so impressed by the quality of his work in the photos i have seen i knew if i was buying a full cage it had to be one of his

once this has arrived and i have welded the feet in im hoping to paint the interior, fit the cage, do a bit of rewiring and fit a lightweight battery behind the passenger seat.

be nice to get it back out and drive it again hopefully then

Nice mate, looks great. Unfortunate way to start track days but shows addictive they are that it encouraged you to do more!
thanks mate! yeah it was a bit of a downer on my first one but its been really reliable since and yes they definately are very addictive! its just so annoying living right down in plymouth the nearest track is combe which is more than a 2 hour drive each way and all the other tracks are probably double that each way ? means i dont have the time or money to do as many trackdays as i would like but maybe one day ill persuade the missus to move a bit nearer to a track ?
