Running but sounding very unhealthy, With vid.

  172, Punto GT 16vt
About 3 weeks ago my engine started to sound tappy so i thought the dephaser was on it's way, then all of a sudden it would'nt start.

Changed all the plugs, leads, coil and i changed the vvt solenoid and managed to get it started (just about) really doesn't sound very healthy and sounds very tappy on idle and worse when revving. Not drove the car yet as i don't want to inccur any damage just incase.

Engine is very shaky and sounds like i have a big hole in my exhaust somewhere aswell.

Can anyone help me out on what it could be?

The vid.

Damn it, is the car ok to drive short distance? just don't want to be damaging anything else.

While it kind of sounds like the de-phaser, it certainly doesn't look like it.

My dephaser was making one hell of a racket, but it did not impact running in the slightest.

I'd get it sorted ASAP but they go on for ages till they let go. Your vibration problem sounds unrelated, get it to a specialist

Specialist 1 1/2-2hours away from me, so looking at finding out what is exactly wrong so im not back and forth the specialist's, wasting fuel.

I need the belts done anyway as the previous owner didnt know if they had been changed.

Just choose a competent garage that is local - there is absolutely no need to travel two hours to have a cambelt done.

The Clio isn't the only car with an F4 engine, nor is it the only car with a dephaser pulley. Read up on the information yourself and just quiz any potential garages on their experience with these systems.

b****cks,

My original engines timing was out and it was done by a 'specialist'. Theres no disrespect intended but I wouldn't let a local garage touch my cam timing.

I have a garage local that changed a mates belts for £560, never had any problem with car since that. There is another garage that i know has changed one so im going to see what price difference they offer.

The thing that i don't want to be doing is changing all the belt's dephaser etc, and then the car is still rough with a different problem.

Thanks for the reply's btw.

b****cks,

Yet I managed to do my own without issue, which was later re-done by a generic garage when doing my waterpump, again without issue.

You said yourself, a specialist messed yours up - it just highlights the point that anyone can mess it up, but as long as you have half a clue and check your work, it can be done by anyone.

For anyone who is interested the camblet tensioner bolt snapped, the head of the bolt sheared off.

Currently being done in the garage now, just hope no damage has been done to valves or any other internal parts.
