IMO thrash it if you are no going to keep it long term,

Over to the usual debate...
I took it easy for a couple of hundred miles then built up so by just over 600 miles I was driving it normally.
When I ran the 172 in I think I took it too easy and it never went as well as it should have done IMO. The 182 on the other hand is flying and its still not got many miles on the clock.

thats very simulor to what i did also, now with 1145 miles on the clock it does seem to go very well, took my 13yr old cousin out the otherday for a quick blast, his comments were.. "god thats quick!" and "this is fast very fast" ok ok hes only 13 but he was impressed and bearing in mind hes been in his dads TVR and 911 turbo.
when i dropped him off iv never seen anyone with such a big grin on their face lol

I hit it hard in my Cup from day 1 as I couldnt resist it, I think I ran it in for 10 miles
!!!Believe me, you will feel a huge difference when you get to around the 5000 mile mark, it really starts to loosen up and becomes a whole lot more fun, if thats possible!!!

just confirms why to never buy one of these 2nd hand if people are treating brand new cars in this manner
Ran mine in as per handbook, with the odd couple of steady accelerations up to 4.5k rpm. Done 1200 miles now & Im slowly winding it up - havent redlined it yet, but Ive been to the "5k kick" 2 or three times.
This will be my strategy too and is what I have done with all my previous new cars.
Definitely wont be going for the "redline before it has done 20 miles" technique!!!
I wonder why we always see threads where people talk about "my car burns 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles"......
This being my first ever brand new car & the fact that I will be keeping it for quite a while encouraged me to run it in as per the handbook. As for my oil level, its hardly moved - both on the electronic gauge and the dipstick (skin my fingers everytime I check it
)

Im not a mechanic but from the many posts i have seen on here and other car forums there is a split.Some say rag it from day one and feel the benefits in performance and others say take it easy and feel the benefits long term.I can see both sides,but i chose the take it easy route as i couldnt bring myself to thrash a new car which i love to bits.Quote: Originally posted by sargeantinio on 29 August 2004

Buying second hand you will have no idea anyway unless you were naive enough to belive every word the seller told you.
Can you expand on why it makes you angry ? Some people with more knowledge than me say it doesnt do any damage and is better for the car,maybe you know different and would like to tell me ?

BOLLOX. I written a whole paragraph then. f**k it, cant be arsed to write it out again. When will i get my member pack, been 2 friggin weeks now. Taking the piss a little.
This probl;em about how to bed the engine in has been written about a lot and it the topic of a lot of disagreements.
I personally can understand and relace to the hard bed in technique that is within the first 20miles you need to get some pressure onto the pistons to get them to bed against the bores to get a good seal so less blowby on the pistons and bette economy less oil burn and better mpg (as less energy is going past the piston). Just make sure you leave it till its warm.
To get some pressure onto the rings get some revs on the engine preferably near the redline a few time running up and down the range a few time.

An engine which is correctly run in to create as best a ring seal as possible will burn least oil. And since rings NEED combustion pressure to seal against the bore its only natural to assume that a greater seal is acheived under more load and higher rpm (a higher VE points). Thus an engine which doesnt see the angy side of 3000rpm for 1.5k wont have been run is as effectively as one which has. Power from running in is all about sealing the rings, and 80% of this is done withing the first few mins of startup. Synthetic oil and pootling doesnt help one bit.
And as long as your oil is in good condition and isnt metallic there is no worry about bearing lifespan and damage.

Tyres and brakes need to be "run in" for at least 600 miles.
It might also be a good idea for you to take it steady for a while as if you read some of the posts on this forum it CAN be quite easy to come to grief in your new high powered hot hatch. (Even experienced drivers can be caught out)

Sounds like b****cks to me, he talks about the roughness required to wear down the rings disappearing after 20 miles but I would suggest that the "roughness" would disappear whilst the engine is being run on the bench after being built plus on top of that you have the 10 miles of delivery mileage.
Now bear in mind that it takes as much as ten miles to get full oil temperature in a large car engine and he points out that the number one cause of engine problems is running an engine hard before it is fully warm...this would make his run-in suggestion impossible?!?! With the bench mileage, delivery mileage and warm up mileage you aint going to rev it before the "roughness" has disappeared!
If roughness is required to wear the rings then he points out the obvious solution later on. He suggests changing the oil after 20 miles. Well if his theory is true Id rather leave it in for 10k to allows its "roughness" to wear the rings - after all he claims that the oil is blowing past them.

you will have to make your own mind up but im planning on keeping mine. Id have done it this way even if i wasnt though.
kept it below 3000revs for 400mile, then up to 3500 odd blip. at 650 mile more prolonged up to 3500 revs up to 1000mile, then gr\adually increased driving normally at 1200mile.
Oil change at 6K (will be anyway) with elf 5W40 oil, then normal service at 12K.
only high revs when warmed up etc etc.
keep it clean, look after it, and it will last longer. fact.
Ive been told by renault that 5w40 elf oil is in from new and there aint any running in oil like subaru use, so thats fully synthetic from day 1 if this is true.
