Running issues, comp. Results

Sorry to bang on about this but I'm trying to get to the bottom of a running problem so have done a compression test.

When started from cold it does the normal raised idle but as it drops it begins to sound rough and the idle struggles and will sometimes die while sounding like a tractor (miss fire)

What I have also found is that if when this happens I unplug any injector plug it sounds smother although now on 3 cylinders. What is interesting is that when plugged back in for a 5 to 10 second period it ticks over really nicely before returning to tractor mode.

Could this be a fuelling issue and are my varying compression results concerning?

Any advice

  dan's cast offs.
Bit low bit nothing to worry about. Compression test doesn't really tell you much anyway.

Ah thanks @bloke , that's put my mind at rest a bit, on Cliosport owners in Facebook I was told it could be toast.

What do you make of my poor running, I've replace pre cat lambda as it came up as faulty on my reader.

could be few things but would need to see it otherwise it's just a guessing game. anyone local ok with diagnostics?

Possibly, unfortunately I live pretty really in Herefordshire but that may be my best bet

Thanks mate, my compression isn't too much to worry about then?

it's a bit low but i'm guessing it was something like a gunson tester and you had injectors plugged in?

Can't remember the brand of tester as I borrowed it, but no injectors unplugged

I should be worried then, as I used a Gunson tester, with the injectors plugged in, and they all read the same, when in fact, they should have been all over the place?

I'll retest it again tomorrow just to confirm and try a wet test and injector spray test while I'm at it.

I was so looking forward to having a 1*2 again but this has left me high and dry with no hope of getting another if this is scrap

If it`s a gunson or similar, grease the " O " ring that seats into the plug thread, and screw it in by the hose, not the gauge itself, to get a good seal.

Hopefully you will get a better evenly matched result.

I've got coil and leads coming this week in the hope that throwing parts at it will help.

To think just over a year ago I had an immaculate arctic blue 182 that I sold when I fell out of love with it

@bloke, retested with all plugs out and a tighter seal on the compression tester (Sykes Pikavant) and got these results -

165 165 170 175 are they acceptable

Also removed fuel rail and did an injector flow test, all four produced equal spray pattern. While off I removed all injectors as they were pretty dirty and rusting, I ohms tested again but this time one came out slightly higher than the others at 15.3ohms vs the rest at 14.7ohms.

Maybe irrelevant but my old golf was fine at tickover but under load it failed 2 injectors. Have you tried it under load with the injectors?

No I've not tried that, I have watched a guy on YouTube whos 172 passed the spray test and ohms but still had a faulty injector.

My injectors look rough to be fair

I had similar issues with an injector on my old 172, would idle fine but under load one played up, was off and on like this for a few months until the faulty injector totally gave up and the car only ran on 3 at idle.

That would be so much better, at least I'd know. The only time I've had an injector issue before was a straight up failure on my 182

Just to add the dash diagnostics trick showed a t for injector fault which reappeared after being cleared

  dan's cast offs.
results are nice and close, looking at injector spray doesn't really tell you anything and if it's the video i'm thinking of where he covers himself in petrol?

what were plugs like?

Yes that's the video, balls'd it right up didn't he!

I've had the plugs out a few times over the last few weeks so I forget their original condition but it wasn't very alarming from memory.

The injectors are rough to say the least, man they took some removing, ended up taking the clips off to get the rail away and tackle them one by one.

I had exactly the same issue for months, misfire like feck from cold and misfire on and off when driving. Turned out to be an injector same as yours as it died one day and ran on 3 cylinders. Id bet it is an injector on its way.

Coil changed but no difference! Not sure I've mentioned this but if I unplug any one injector when the cars running rough you can tell it goes down to three cylinders, when I plug it back in for a few seconds it runs sweet again before returning to running rough.

When running the dash diagnostics I can see the fuel being used dropping from 1.7 to 1.1 lph

If the cars a keeper, I`d just replace all 4 injectors with new.

What`s the mileage?

88k Steve, I only bought it in November but it's not as tidy as I'd like with a few dings and scratches that I didn't notice as I stupidly bought it on a wet day when it looked far more tidy. I think my only option is to make it run well whether I keep it or not

You could put up a wanted thread, see what you get offered to keep the cost down.

Sounds like you have misfires on multiple cylinders which could be a whole list of things. If you've checked injectors, coils, plugs. List of things to look for:
  • Faulty spark plugs or wires
  • Faulty coil (pack)
  • Faulty oxygen sensor (s)
  • Faulty fuel injector(s)
  • Burned exhaust valve
  • Faulty catalytic converter(s)
  • Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
  • Faulty camshaft position sensor
  • Defective computer

I think most of that got covered in the previous thread before you joined.

New coil
New genuine lambda
Cleaned plugs
Cleaned up all relays and plugs in the fuse box
Run a compression test

Ha! Solved it!

Ran another scan and the pre cat lambda is coming up AGAIN so remembering reading @bloke it think it was saying about corroded plugs on lambdas I jacked it up and removed my new lambda plug and there it was, after all this time! The loom plug was slightly corroded but more importantly two of the four connectors had been pulled up inside the plug.
I carefully removed the rubber seal from the back of the plug, pushed the pins back to the same point as the other two and reinserted the bung.

Starts and runs like a dream now! Now it deserves new belts
