For the problems you have been experiencing, we recommend that you try the steps listed below. It is advised that you print this email before you continue as there may be occasions when you will need to close AOL for troubleshooting and this will prevent you from reading the required steps. It is also advisable that you save a copy of this email in your PFC for future reference in the event of a repeat occurrence of this problem. After completing each step you can connect to AOL to see if it has solved the problem. If the problem is still occurring proceed to the next step.
STEP 1:
Close other Programes while starting AOL.
1. Right-click the Task Bar located near the clock, then click Task Manager.
2. On the Applications tab, select a Program, then click the End Task button.
3. If prompted, click the End Now button. Continue until all programs are closed.
4. Click the Processes tab.
5. Click Image Name to sort the processes alphabetically.
6. Select a Process other than the required processes listed below, then click the End Process button.
Required Processes
(Do not end):
explorer.exe
services.exe
spoolsv.exe
svchost.exe
system
taskmgr.exe
winlogon.exe
If prompted by a Task Manager Warning, click the Yes button. Continue until all processes other than the required processes listed below are closed.
STEP 2:
Delete Cache
1. Double click 'My Computer'
2. Go to C:\ --> Program Files --> AOL 8.0 /AOL 9.0 -->Organize
3. Delete the Cache folder and restart AOL
Alternatively,If you are using AOL 9 then
Please click on start > programs > Aol > Aol system information > Utilities tab > clear Browser Cache.... click on it until it becomes Zero..
STEP 3:
Delete Cookies
Click on the Start button->Settings->Control Panel->Internet options->Settings Tab->Click on view files->Press Ctrl + A ->then press Delete.
STEP 4:
Delete Temporary Interent Files
Click on SETTINGS - Internet (Web browser) Settings ...GENERAL... and choose 'Delete files' icon under Temporary Internet files. Also click on the 'Clear History' option which is also on this screen .....
STEP 5:
Auto Fix (For AOL 9 users only)
1.Click on Help and select AOL Help. When AOL Help opens, click on the Resolving Problems (located within the left hand panel) and then select Solving Common AOL Problems.
2.Click on the link entitled "AOL is running slowly ". When the new window opens, click on Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.
STEP 6:
Run Disc-cleanup
Click the Start button, then Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools.
Click Disk Cleanup. At this stage you may be asked to select the disk drive you want to clean up. You should choose your default hard disk (usually the C: drive).
In the Files to Delete window, review the ticked options to make sure that these files can be safely deleted. You may also review the additional options not ticked by default by highlighting an item and clicking on View Files before deciding if those files are no longer needed.
Once you've ticked all files which can be safely deleted, click OK.
STEP 7:
Run Disc-Defrag ( If your einire PC is working Slow apart from AOL)
To run a disk defrag click on START -> ALL PROGRAMS -> ACCCESSORIES -> SYSTEM TOOLS. Select disk defragmenter from there. First click on Analyze first to allow Windows 2000 to check if the drive actually needs to be defragmented. Once the disk analysis is finished just click on Defragment if you wish to defragment your hard disk
STEP 8:
Disable/Configure your Firewall if you are using any
BlackICE PC Protection
McAfee Personal Firewall
Norton Personal Firewall
PC-cillin
ZoneAlarm
Windows XP (SP2) Firewall
For all firewall packages, the AOL program files you should set to permit / allow are as follows:
waol.exe
aoltpspd.exe
AOLacsd.exe
AOLDial.exe
Note: You should use only one firewall at one time . IF you are using windows:XPSP2 firewall then you should disable the Mcafee Firewall and
Vice-verca
STEP 9:
Repair ACS
Please follow these steps offline; Also , AOL should be closed while doing this:::
please go Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
locate AOL Connectivity Services on the list of programmes
select it and click on the Change / Remove OR Add/Remove Button
then select the option Repair AOL Connectivity Service
click Ok after the repair is done Close all windows and restart the PC .
STEP 10:Run Spyware
Please also visit the keyword SPYWARE and run ADAWARE and SPYBOT from there.
STEP 11:
MsConfig (For Windows XP users only)
For windows xp users, click Start, and then run, and delete anything that may be already in there. In the run box type msconfig and click ok. On the top of the configuration utility you will see a list of tabs, starting with general, and ending with startup. Click startup.
Here you will see a list of items with ticks against them. Click the button at the very bottom that says disable all, and then go back through the list and retick the following.
Dslstat, dslagent, aoldial, aolspscheduler, aol broadband ch, If you have a firewall or antivirus software, it is a good idea to retick them too. Some of the following are common files you may see and also need to tick. Mcsheild, mpftray.exe, ccapp, nvwiz and nvcpl.
Click Apply and then click restart now. When the computer has restarted and you are back to your desktop the first thing you will see is a message that says you have used the system configuration utility. Tick the box that says don't show this message again, and click ok.
If you wish to undo any changes made then simply follow the above procedure but make sure all tickboxes are ticked, before restarting.
