Re: My new project - 106 GTI
Sorry another dull update from me...
I started prepping the car to start painting it and cutter the final brackets out of the car. I had planned on drilling the welds out but the metal is so thin that when we pulled away it tried taking the rest of car with it.
Just some of the brackets I cut out, which the old rear bench used to bolt to.
Before -
After - I did clean them up after the taking photo.
I also removed the old heater matrix which is being replaced by the one pictured above. Its quite amazing how much it weighed and how much room it took up behind the dash.
I then set to masking a few bits up and started painting the floor. I am happy with the results I applied around 2 coats before running out of paint. Halfords will hopefully be back in stock on Thursday which should allow me to finish the boot floor.
Its Finally looking red again -
While waiting for the paint to dry I set on removing the brake servo so I could get access to the bulkhead to install the new brake and fuel lines. I also removed the bonnet as it was doing my head in and also the front slam panel so I could get it painted up. I removed the radiator so I can get the manifold out easier to heat wrap and also cut out the old support which the radiator sits on and weld a new one in which isn't bent up and also fit a bracket for the oil cooler.
While it was in bits I also got the wing off ready for underseal and got shot of the charcoal canister.
This is for when it all goes wrong after all this work, the guys keeping my spirits high clearly - I thought it was being put up for the ginger one!
So Saturday morning, I started fitting the rear breaklines as I couldn't contiue painting the rear of the car or fit the in car brake lines because I forgot to order the bulkhead connectors ... Doh! I opted for copper brake lines purely because of cost at this stage and I quite enjoyed learning to fit copper lines.
The rear brake lines -
After getting the hang of making them up, I popped the servo and master cylinder back in place, got adventurous and started the fronts -
Feeling rather happy I then started on making up a bracket for the new heater which arrived on Friday
I modified the old airbag ecu bracket which worked perfectly.
The heater in its new home..
I made up a new panel that the ducting fits in to and puts the air in to the correct parts of the dashboard. The only issue was the ducting was about 100mm to short.
Hopefully the fuel lines arrive tomorrow, Once fitted I can then start piecing the inside back together. I also need to give the roll cage a new lick of black paint as its looking rather tatty.
