I already I have the GTI6 brakes and its already cammed, but the brakes just don't seem to have the power... I suspect its the s**ttypads that are fitted.

LOL. I totally missed that.

DS3000's? and a upgraded M/C?

Re: My new project - 106 GTI

Well I have been very slack with this... Mainly because the whole project went on hold because of other commitments.

I am now back on track, the car has developed an issue being, the rear beam is now squeaking more than Jordan's bed springs. After investigating in to what this could, be a friend of mine who use to work on a few of the cup cars has highlighted that the issue could be from where the beam mounts to the car. The fixing is prone to come away and crack causing the squeaking he has seen this a lot over the years and has suggested I check it first before I go ahead and refurb the beam (which is on the list but on hold to after xmas).

Anyway I have got some new bits for the car being - New race battery to be located behind the passenger seat.
- Simota Induction kit
- FIA approved cut off and battery cable etc.
- New steering wheel & boss

I am hoping to get the bits sorted on the car this saturday, along with a oil & filter change.

Last night I made up the new panel for the centre console at work using 3mm acrylic.

Just FYI, Clio 1*2 pads fit in GTi-6 calipers.

Looks epic.

Reminds me of my old XSi 16v!

Cheers Budgie.

Do they fit all the calipers? I know the ones on mine are the lucas ones, but there was some variation between the brakes used on the gti-6

Unsure on which brand of calipers, but I definitely fitted a set of 172 DS2500's into a GTi-6 no problems.

Alfa GTV 3.0 pads fit too, but the Clio ones are bigger iirc..

Yeah if you fit the bigger DS2500 pads from the 172 into the Gti6 calipers they will allow you to lock your wheels at 70 and do an endo.

lol! Cheers for that guys, I will have a look at getting a set and see if they fit.

Oh they definately fit! I had Gti6 calipers, clio DS2500's, braided lines, GTi6 master cylinder and just standard rear stuff and it stopped obscenely well!!

Awesome Cheers Dave, I will buy myself a set the pads need changing so may aswell get them. I need to get a gti-6 master cylinder still, looking at a few on ebay at the minute, as the pedal feel with the standard one at the minute is shite.

Re: My new project - 106 GTI

Update...

Well since December the car has had its moments making me love & hate it even more than ever! Not long after the last update, the car decided it wanted to try and set itself on fire, this was caused by the loom runs in underneath the nearside arch rubbing away at the wing. Turns out it was just wrapped up in electrical tape, luckily this happened on the driveway and not while driving it.

9089592482_096f0a92fb_c.jpg

So after many swear words, I set about sorting the issue and had the pain staking job over soldering wires back in to the loom! This was clearly nice and easy when all the colours matched....... NOT!

9089590598_3c0500c769_c.jpg

So after two evenings sat outside in the pouring rain and minus temperatures I got the wires all matched up and soldered, heat-shrunk and put in some conduit. However with it being crap and french it turned out that it had blown the majority of the fuse box so once I traced back what it had also buggered up, I started it and it sprung in to life. We were back in business and I could now start making progress with the things that actually mattered and needed sorting.

2 weeks later..... (January)

Driving to a friends house for a catch up and I pop it in to 5th on a dual carraigeway and I let of the accelarator it throws the gearstick back at me and refuses to stay in 5th gear.... ARGH! So the gate is clearly buggered, not to mention the car had started making some awful noises and rattles from the gearbox, just what I wanted. It also starting making a whining noise from the nearside... which I still can't figure out.

At this point I had lost all hope, I parked the car up and took it off the road until I found the motivation to find another box and fix the sack of shite!

April ...

A miracle happened, I found some motivation and the weather started to get better. This helped me pull my finger out and start fixing the car, I sourced another gearbox off ebay, bought a new clutch, booked and MOT and got started getting back on the road.

I managed to get this all done along with a list as long as my arm to get it ready for the MOT, luckily a few friends chipped in and helped me get it ready.

A couple of late nights in the pissing rain and she was ready..

9087371067_c107d830a2_c.jpg

MOT day came around and I was nervous, while driving the car to the garage, two bulbs decided to screw up along with the new gearbox making some awful sounds. So after a mad rush I sorted the issues and handed over the keys and went for a nice big breakfast.

An hour later I got a phone call saying it had passed with no advisories, I was chuffed however the MOT tester must of fancied me because I really wasn't expecting it to pass, never mind get a clean sheet.

So I finally started to enjoy the car again, I wired the new battery in, sorted the ignition cut, gave it service and was starting to make plans to get a cage in and work towards doing the sprint at Abingdon carnival.

Even took a few photos..

8655009737_839107827d_c.jpg

May..

After a thousand or so trouble free miles in the car, I start hearing a knocking noise. At first I thought it could of been a loose engine/gearbox mount, so I changed the top gearbox mount and checked the lower one was tight, noise was still there.

I was beginning to hate the car again, it was just one thing after another. I jacked the car up and popped both front wheels off and stuck the car in gear to investigate the noise to discover lots of play in the diff, when the car was in gear you could turn the wheel a good 270 before it engaged. Great so another buggered gearbox, at this point I decided to drive it until it broke.

During this time I picked up a set of 205 speedlines for a steal so I couldn't say no!

9089586258_fc2245e5ab_c.jpg

I was happy and started lining up another gearbox until crap luck set in again.

After pottering round in my brothers car for work I came home to find my car looking like this outside my house....

9087370431_43e03412f4_c.jpg

A neighbours friend had reversed in to it and just driven off and not bothered to let me or my family know. I managed to figure out who had done it after knocking on his door with a piece of paint left on mine from his car, asking if he had a friend with that colour car after first saying no, I threatened to call the police what do you know an hour later I get a knock at the door.

I didn't really want to bother with insurance, so I suggested he purchased the new wing and paid for it to be painted and he agreed, thank god!

June..

After finding an indigo blue wing on ebay for £28.00 with arch I got straight round to fitting it.

9089588156_3862a6273c_c.jpg

I sent the car off to the paint shop the following week, and got it painted up however a 13 year red car it which is had faded pretty bad in places I wasn't expecting great things for this new red wing which stands out like a sore thumb, the door is pink at the bottom and the wing is red and matches the new wing lol!

While the car was getting paint done a friend offered me a dished steering wheel out of his mk2 escort rally car he was breaking, so I couldn't say no. I knew I had to bring the wheel closer to me as I felt cramped with the old wheel and couldn't bring the seat as far back as I needed to.

9089585466_d70f18b084_c.jpg

With the new wheel fitted the car feels great to drive, so much more comfortable. So after getting the car I finally sourced another Gti box off an a forum instead of ebay, I arranged courier and got it fitted last week. The car is now driving so much better, no more knocks every time I lift of the throttle.

However one issue I am having, which I have had since the first box gave up is I am getting a high pitch whine from the nearside, I can dip the clutch, brake etc and it doesn't go away. It seems to come and go and the only time it stops happening is when I come to a halt. I have noticed it always from 30mph in any gear :/ I am stumpted to what it could be, I am going to change drive shaft next week and also the speedo drive, as I have used the same one in all 3 boxes.

Next major jobs on the list are -

source and fit full cage.
fit new master cylinder and braided lines.
fit floor plates and griptape.

Hopefully if I get all that sorted I will be doing an abingdon track day next month aswell an autosolo with my local motor club.. :)

I am hopefully also picking up a new project and donor car next week, its another gti in silver, the bottom end has gone so i am going to strip it for all useable parts and keep them as spares for this car. Providing the shell is in decent condition I will be stripping it back and starting from ground up, building up the shell over time with intentions of building another car to enter a race series with.

Re: My new project - 106 GTI

Bit of an update...

I bought the silver 106 above and started stripping it down for parts and have ended up with a good stock of spares including spare 360 gti6 brakes, bilstein B8 front shocks, good condition rear beam etc etc.. The plans are to pull the engine from that car and overhaul it with the intention of having it spare and ready to go in if I need it. Then eventually strip the shell bare and start from scratch!

Over the past few weeks I have done plenty of dirty work on the car. Its had a whole new rear beam fitted, fully polybushed. I have also fitted all poly bushes on the front of the car. New Braided lines back and front with a 306 gti6 master cylinder, which has improved the gti6 brakes massively. I have tidied up wiring under the bonnet and inside the car, also fitted a panel were the glove box used to be for the fuse board, this over time will also have a few other switches on it. The car also started pissing out oil last week so I refitted the sump and did a oil and filter change.

The car is now ready to have the full cage fitted which I am collecting in about two weeks time!!! I am hoping to have this fitted for a sprint I am doing in October and a trackday at the end of September. Right now the car is ready for an autosolo in 3 weeks time which should be fun. The list of jobs still keep growing on the car and it does need a new nearside front wheel bearing which will get sorted sometime in the next week.

next jobs on the list -

- Paint the inside of the car gloss red and clean it up.
- Collect and fit cage
- New brake lines through the car with bias valve and hydraulic handbrake
- Braided fuel lines run through the car.
- Extinguisher kit needs to be fitted
- Engine kill pull cord needs to also be ran.
- Purchase and fit satch shift kit.
- Fit Poly window kit.
- Fit New Carbon door cards
- Fit solid engine mounts and lower arm mounts.
- Fit oil cooler.

I am now able to take the car off the road as I am about to buy a cheap diesel to commute in instead of either this or borrowing my brothers car. My aims with car are to start using it for tarmac rallies and also hill climbs in the next 18 months. I already use it for sprints, trackdays and autosolo's.

Anyway some whoring of the french shed. -

Re: My new project - 106 GTI

Since I last updated this thread the car has undergone a few changes, along with a few changes in my situation.

In September I managed to pick up a 6 point OMP cage for it for the car, at the time I had no way of fitting it as I didn't have any space to work on the car. Finally I found the space and a trusty welder to fit the plates for the cage to MSA regulation.

11522002894_a5280b937f_c.jpg

We finally got the cage in and the plates all welded in by my friend above who is a real wizard with a grinder and welder.

Once the cage was fitted I got the car home and started to scope out a new workshop, I initially thought about building a large shed but it just wasn't finically viable.

Luckily a few weeks back me an a friend found a unit really local to me, just built and at a great price so we did got sorted and got ourselves a move in date which was Saturday.

The car in its new home -

11522007385_49951f6ac2_c.jpg

We spent sunday building a new work bench and moving the rest our gear and cars over.

The workshop sorry for the terrible iPhone pano -

11522058083_d6c98deaf0_c.jpg

I finally got work on the car today and got the cage out along with the dash ready for paint and also so I can start stripping the loom back.

11522036756_7c495445ab_c.jpg

Thats it for now but I think most of my evenings are weekend are now going to be spent here :)

Great project, it looks great in red, never really seen many in that colour. I like it on the 205 GTI wheels, they're different, but suit it well.

Cheers guys!! I am gagging to get working on the car again!

You are correct you don't see many cheery red 106's around these days it's a pain to find spares the correct colour and it doesn't help they fade terribly!

I aim to update the thread alot more now I can get working on the car more :)

Re: My new project - 106 GTI

Another productive day down the workshop..

I stripped the rest of the sound deadening out from behind the dash and heater, then removed the airbag unit. I am thinking of removing the heater and replacing it with a small one that my friend has just fitted in to his Nova which is much smaller and much neater.

11673063213_741000d627_z.jpg

what was remaining of the deadening and the airbag ecu.

11673538996_121a92212c_z.jpg

I then removed the fuel lines and cracked on removing all the horrid sound deadening in the footwells. Not the funnest of jobs, but needed doing. I then cleaned it back and put down some primer on the new cage mounts and the floor.

11672790045_2d469f7d3a_c.jpg

Next it was to remove the sticky crap from the back of the car.. This stuff was a little harder but nothing that a blow torch couldn't sort out.

Before -

11672768265_2f083998b6_z.jpg

After -

11672779905_f2ae58788e_z.jpg

After scraping and sanding for the most of the day, along with usual banter from my mate getting his nova running I got quite a lot done, I just need to mask and clean up other parts and cut out the brackets that aren't needed and it will be ready for some nice gloss red paint.

11672742675_94237bd362_c.jpg

Hopefully I will get back down there tomorrow, I also need to remove the bumper and taillights. The car decided to remove the nearside one itself after I knocked it while crawling round in the back of the car.

Re: My new project - 106 GTI

Well tonight I managed to get down to the unit for a few hours.. I am buying the paint for the inside tomorrow so decided to productive and remove the rear bumper and unscrew the plastic crap from behind it and find a way of remounting it.

11696956496_fd1567db40_z.jpg

The black panel actually weighs more than the bumper when separated, I also removed the other taillight which easily had over a pint of water in it :/ French crap!

All removed.. I give you the bare Arse of a 106!

11696928456_38449aba65_c.jpg

Once cleaned up and removed I drilled two holes in the rear of the car, so the new bumper bolts that go straight through in to the boot andfitted the threaded bar to the bumper.

11696399283_8a86904722_c.jpg

I now just need to do a similar thing to the front bumper.

Both the cars are looking rather sorry for themselves at the minute but both getting quite a lot of love over winter.

11696474724_ba83cf6bff_c.jpg

11696368553_8d26b6a41b_c.jpg

I have finally ordered all my fuel lines this evening from torques.co.uk so hopefully they will be here soon enough and I can get them fitted once the interior is all painted.

Fingers crossed I can get down after work tomorrow and then I have all day Friday and Saturday on the car :D
