Trophy #267
Ive been toying with having a decent play in trying to repair some of the various stone chips and scratches I have collected in the past 3 years. My wife works for a Co. which sells car polishes and various compounds so I have access to some half decent stuff at a reasonable price should I feel the need.
Im not entirely sure how your supposed to go about repairing scratched properly so have been googling for the past few days.
My assumption is this. Bodywork is made up of 4 layers.
Metal Body (or plastic)
Primer Layer
Paint Layer
Lacquer Layer
Light scratches penetrate the laquer which just require sanding to take the edge of the sratch and buffing / polishing to get a nice finish.
I do have the odd stone chip and slightly deeper scratch tho which initially i had dabbed with my matched reno touch up pen so stop rusting but its fair to say they are every obvious. These are the ones I want to try and do a proper job off.
My thoughts are that initially, you have to sand with very fine paper (poss wet n dry) so that the area is smooth. Once so is it a case of re priming, drying, sanding till smooth, re painting, waiting till dry, resomoothing, reapplying some lacquer, drying, smoothing and then waxing ?
ie rebuilding all of the thinner layers back up ? Obvs diffenet mops for buffing / polishing help speed things up but as ive never done this b4 am a bit aprehensive.
Thoughts pls !
