Screen Brightness

this is really starting to annoy me now, ive searched and i cant find any setting

when i log onto my account on my computer, just after showing the desktop for a second the screen goes darker, the mouse pointer stays very bright, and the darkness seems to fade from the top to the bottom, my taskbar is normal brightness

if i log in and out a few times sometimes it stays bright which is how i want it

anyone help ?

grrrr sorry, seems its something to do with the fact id disabled the ATI Control Centre
