Sealants.........Remind me...

been a while since ive been reading anything about polish/wax etc and im a bit hazy on where sealants come into the equation

most of them seem to be advertised as an all in one product, but some, such as Megs #7 are classed as a sealant on some websites and im pretty certain it isnt one, more of a pure polish if anything, a paint 'feeder'

are they basically a man made attempt to better carnauba and once the paint is prepared are basically your top layer...

im going to be using some vanilla moose hand glaze pretty soon once the weather is a bit better and i was thinking of treating it to #7 afterwards, with something else on top........maybe my bottle of #21, i also have EX-P which is classed as a sealant

very tempted just to use NXT though as ive had very good results with it, just dont like how it doesnt bead like a carnauba, i like to see the protection like 476s does :approve:

No real benifit to doing both VM and #7 as the both do the same thing, but VM has some mild cleaners to Clean and Glaze.

#7 is a Glaze, it can be used as a temp. seal on new paint, but is not a sealant in the sense your thinking of. Sealants are formulated containing a blend of ingredients to provide lasting protection, some contain polymers that cross link to help do this. A good sealant should out last a wax by 2 or 3 times. The pay off is thay can't seem to match the look of Carnuba, that's why lots of people apply a sealant and then top with wax for protection and looks, getting the best of both.

Using #7 or VM, as they are both oily products no sealant will really bond to them. EX or #21 are the best options as they will at least take over the top, just you wont get the full protection. With NXT the light cleaners will remove some of the oils left behind and allow it to bond, if you like it's looks use that and then top with Carnuba.

Some of the longer lasting sealants need a clean, oil free base such as Klasse AIO to bond to for maximum protection.

Have a search on the forum for sealants and yes p21s would be ok to top your sealant with

If you doing the megs 3 step, you may aswell skip step 3 and use the P21s then rather than the Stage 3 Carnuba Wax.

I was gonna ask a question but I went on the Autoglym website and all is clear! They have a guide on there on how to clean your car from start to finish and which product to use.

a glaze is a pre LSP product isnt it, and a sealant is a LSP

Unless you are doing a show and just want maximum looks yes - a glaze should be used before sealant or wax.

Well I went down to Halfords this morning and bought some more AG stuff. I got the tar remover, tyre dressing and extra gloss. The tar remover was ok, I'd not removed spots sinced I got the car over 18b months ago so I was there a while. The tyre stuff looks ok, I'll see how long it lasts. I super resin polished the roof again and it doesn't do ANYTHING to reduce the appearance of the swirls. Pff! So I sacked that off after the roof and went on to apply gloss protection. I've left it on there for nearly an hour now. I'm gonna leave it a while longer and see what that looks like. I can't imagine it'll look much different, but I can't wait for the rain then. Ooh it'll be beady, oooh the beads, I love em!

As soon as we get a decent run of weather we'll have to arrange for me to come and pay you a visit Rich to go to work on these swirls. That and an alloy refurb and it'll be back to it's former glory!

The Autoglym Tyre Dressing is not that great at lasting, the megs Endurance is a better option there.

AG SRP is very mild, it wont do much on anything other than very minor marring, you will need at least Scratch X on the swirls.

Holy moly! I took off the extra gloss and my car is now one shiny mofo! It is SO shiny I can't believe it. I've given it such a good clean though that I've discovered a million scratches all over the place that I didn't know about before I've got a lot of stone chips to the front of the bonnet too. I think I judged too early aboout the super polish reducing the swirls. Now I've done the EGP too it does look better. There's still loads there, but it's not as bad.

The painter who did my car must have had a hangover or something though. The paint feels smooth but you see underneath it's a bit orange peely so although I get good reflection now, it's not a mirror finish, more like a mirror from Blackpool funhouse Bloody frog, have some pride in your work!

Orange peel is a standard feature on most new cars these days unfortnatley
