Secret mods help needed

  Ph1

Right then I want to make my mk1 172 a little quicker with out telling the insurance company. When all said and done theyd only find out if I totaled the car anyway.

Im thinking of these bolt on style mods, as I live in the sticks I need to take my car to a local garage and cant be hassled traveling 200 miles plus for head work etc.

So which mod should I start with and which would give me the best power gain alone ?

(1) Cams....is it best to buy these or get mine re-profiled [ piper ones I think ? ]

(2) Superchip....the only prob here is a guy told me the engine wont last as long with one of these fitted cos of the need to rev it it generates excess heat is he right ?....

(3) De-cat .....who sells them ? and are they worth the power gain VS the hassle of the mot having to change it ?.

Oh yes my cars a late Y plater

Cheers

cam that you would buy are normally reprofiled due to the costs

excessive heat? who told you that load of b****cks?

you will normally notice a difference with a decat. quite a few people on here have got them

Yeah I thought the heat with the chip thing was wrong

Who sells these de-cats ? are they just a bolt on and away u go ? the car wont run rich or run lean will it ?

With the cams I thought you had a choice of buying the complete kit or having your original ones re-profiled to the same spec ?

Deat will decrease the enhaust gas restriction so the air can exit the pitston better so more new fresh air fuel mix can enter the engine so you get more power. Cannotsee any problems running one there are quite a few members with them without problems.

Cams are your old ones reprofiled I think there are no blanks availibale so if you need new one making up they will probably go and buy some from Renault andmodify those ones. Its cheaper having your own cams remade as having blanks etc made will be the same profile anyway.

DONT though not tell the insuracne comapny look at conner on here as an excellent example he has a £4k bill to fix his car as his insuracne was invalid when they spotted his different alloys you dont want to be in his position. From now on insurance companies will get more picky checkin cars for mods as void policies are much cheaper than paying out and its a cut throat business out there if they can lower premiums and not have to pay out they will. Since your willing to spend money on insuracne and mods why waste it all by not telling the inurance company about the mods a couple of quid is nothing compaired to what you will spend on the mods probably.

For the de-cat boys

Did you tell your insurance company about this mod ?

if so how much did it go up ? if at all that is

Would have thought a set of cams would be very difficult to detect in the event of a write off ?

Remember i had the story up a month or so ago about me running into the back of the other car in my mk1 172.Well direct line came and picked my car up and took it away for 3 weeks and fix it like brand new.The mods on my car are,Supersprint 70mm race exhaust and decat(the loudest exhaust ever)Apex 40mm lowering springs,Tarox Sport japan brakes,B+M Quickshift and R-sport ecu.Ok so the ecu is unnoticable but the exhaust and the fact its lowered you cannot help but notice.I did have a Hillpower Induction Kit onit as well but took that off as it was a 2 minute job,but i left everything else on the car and not one word was said to me,so i guess its just your luck if they say anything or not.

not telling ins comp is not worth the risk, if your lucky your real lucky, on the other hand if you injure, laim or kill someone else and the ins comp find out you didnt disclose the mods your up sh*t creek

Aye,

Connor (iirc) had his insurance voided because he had alloys that werent declared, even tho the alloys had nothing to do with teh reason for the claim.

Hey your secret isnt very secret now! Nearly 200 people have read this post so it might not have been such a great idea to ask people in here about something illegal, as some may be coppers or insurance people themselves!

Anyway as said in the above posts, it aint worth the hastle, for only another £40-80 you could get your mods insured legally with specialist companies, instead of losing your pride and joy when they dont pay out on a smash! You may think it might never happen but its better to be safe than sorry!
