Shall i P/x 182 for Escort Cosworth..

Been thinking that i would never be able to afford this kind of cash again, i own and run a Clio 182 and was thinking about P/Xing it against a Escort Cosworth, its not that much more too insure as im on group 16 now.

I guess its a chance of a lifetime,



What are the +s and -s of a car like this. The downside is that its a highly desireable car to be stolen but has the looks and performance to match...

What would you do.??
 


If you want the Escort and can afford it without selling a kidney or a lung buy it.

If you dont want it that much or cant afford it dont do it.

In the end just ask yourself whether youd regret not owning the Escort more than selling the Clio to get it.
 


escort was £12000 for a standard M reg, was hoping for £9,500 for me 182 then £1500 px for it.

Owe £6500 on the clio through a bank loan as i bought it with cash. Thinking that i can buy a clio in 2-3yrs time....maybe not the escort again.
 


Whats the mileage on the Escort, are you going to be using it as a daily drive? Running costs will be a lot more than the 182, and insurance will be a fair bit more.

The Escort seems fairly cheap, I was really considering one before I got my 182, but the ones I looked at where all at least 14 k in the condition I wanted.
 


if you want it got ofr it, but there are a whole world of possible problems your gonna get with an Mreg cossie that you wont get with the 182. Things will break and you really have to watch where you leave it, be careful about carjacking etc. as R jay says 12k is cheap for a cossie. A minter is gonna be more like 15k. Also If I were you Id be looking for more than 9.5k on the 182

In standard trim the cossie (big turbo model) is known for not being the best of mengines, big lag.

But the handling of them is second to none.
 


Well as mentioned above, i will only get one chance at owning one, and im 25 in 2 days so therefore me insurance drops too £900 for the cosworth. As for parking it would be parked on the raf camp during the week, then when i go home would be the only problem.

Its a chance of a lifetime but i do worry about if things go wrong. The cosworth for £12k i about right as ive seen some for £9k and some for £16+. There is 1 or 2 on ebay that are standard, and 1 in AutoTrader. The bloke i was going to deal with was in the autotrader and is a trader so therefore the option to p/x the clio.

I paid £10,600 for the 182 in December as i got the car used, i could push for a better price, but i do consider that what if question i ask myself. The car cant be really much costlier for tyres than im paying now...come on £82 per tyre for the PE02s. As for performance, well if i wanted performance id buy a Evo 7 FQ340 or something but its not all about that. Its all about the i own a escort cosworth factor and i would use it weekly as i would commute from work to the gfs, maybe 400 mile per weekend.

I think its definately a option, just need to work out the factors. The value of the car wont fall as much as the clio as these have taken most of the fall now. In a yr time the clioo would be worth £8k-8,500, no point in lying to myself on this one, we all know how its going to be once the new clio comes out. I can always trade the cosworth back in to the dealer in 6-7months and get most of me cash back.

These things dont go down in price, i think they just stay the same...

Yeah the Escort should if anyting start going up in value, as long as you dont end up putting silly miles on it, you should be able to get back what you paid for it.

Like you say its the whole ownig one factor, they are a true classic. Most insurance companies want a Tracker and garaged over night, living on the RAF base you may be ok, its not something you can really leave anywhere.

As for running costs it will need servicing a lot more frequently than the 182.

As for tyres

OE Pirelli P-Zero 225/45/16 not sure on cost

Are there any standard Escort cossies left? I got roundly smoked by a modded eccy last week. It f**king flew!

If you can afford to buy and more importantly run one then go for it. Dont just go for the first one you see tho...
 


Me and my mate were talking about this recently - im now 30 with a family on the way:oops: and no chance of every having a Escort Cossie. I had my chance and bought something newer at the time.

My mate bought a new MY00 Scoob as it was supposedly better etc etc...



5 years down the line were both regretting not buying what we really wanted - his Scoob sold recently for £8,000 less than what he paid for it.

If we had bought those Escort Cossies we were planning they would have been worth more not less - you live and learn.
 


Im more than happy to buy a cossie, but the gf is on my case as she likes the clio and does not like the cossie. I prefer them as mentioned as i think they are the bees knees even to own one for 6-7months. Obviously the parking of the car would be a problem as i live on the worth council estate around in Chester and there aint no gates on the house drive either. Ive had no bother with the clio tho, also the car would be parked outside the gfs on the road if i did go to hers in it.

I would not be arsed if it was stolen as id be insured anyway. The £1200 quote was for the car with £0 excess so id only lose the ncb then prob have to drop down too a 1.1 car or something.

There is a few about around the weekend and ill go take a peek. Only worries would be if the engine blew or something as these things aint cheap to repair. I could surely run one as i cant see it being much much more than the clio. I probably average 32mpg in the clio anyway, so therefore the cossie would be pushing 26-30mpg as mentioned on some websites. People say that if you think about the mpg then you cant afford the car. We i do like to think about this, petrol costs are getting higher so therefore it has a detrimental effect on all of us sports car drivers. Tyres cant get more expensive than the £135 quoted by kwikfit per tyre for the clio........

Escort cosworth is a legendary car and everybody should experince one, even if in my case the hype was bigger than the car, lol.

Know of any standard esc coss do you? TBH they are lame standard but stg3 is rapid beyond any clio.

In ten years your clio wont even px for the escorts alloys but the 20+ escort will still be worth somin.

Its not the everyday running, its the almost enevitable breakdowns.

Things like engine, headgasket, gearbox, turbo all cost a bomb and there are soo many sh!tters about.

Be careful with tuners too, most know f all.

Use Motorsport developments up north or MA Developments down south.

go for it mate,but only if you can afford to run it,i got rid of my valver and got a 397bhp sapphire,(not to everyones taste)but for the money nothing will touch it in terms of performance-awesome,the escorts look the b****cks!

but................its cost me a rebuild over 2k in parts alone,and that was after 2 months of ownership,so be carefull what you buy,i let the big bhp figures rule my head,but all will be well soon,if you do decide to get it then make sure you have some cash set aside,if anything goes wrong,its not gonna be cheap,and no doubt youll end up modding it as the possibilities are endless, i bought my cossie as i knew if i didnt get one now(as i have no ties) i probably never would,its paid for now,and will not be my daily runner,more of a toy,so its here to stay!
 


I had the same idea bill, but i was looking for a standard version. My best mate is a really good ford mechanic so therefore on some of the lesser probs he could help me out.

Its the engine changes / rebuilds that scare me with these things.

£2k is nothing, 2 months savings...
 


Defo get the cossie! After a few slight tuning mods you will not regret.

My dad is using my uncles at the moment, and although it has had a lot of engine work done, you just cant beat the looks of them.

For its age the interior is still very good, obviously its full recaro leather, electric everything.

My dad is currently rinning my uncles in after a rebuild, so the boost is turned down and he cant take it past 4-5K rpm at the moment, and even like that it would leave a clio for sh*t.

The handling is out of this world too, i think my uncles has had upgraded suspension, but even so. They go round corners like they are on rails, and traction is no problem, even in the wet, you will find it hard to spin the wheels.

Just go for a drive in one, it will make you want it for sure. Its one of those cars which makes me smile everytime i get in it. And once you get a few engine mods such as dump valves, IK, etc the noise is gorgeous!

Friend of mine had one, not really my thing though, but each to their own. Someone did attempt to steal it when he was in the gym but although they got in the car, they didnt start it - caused enough damage getting in though... To make it worse, Id recreated the scene from Titanic with the hand print on the window the night before...
 


At the end of the day a cossie is a real head turner. As long as you like lots of people looking at you + attention go for it!

I would personally keep it for 6 months then get rid. At least you have owned the car then and dont risk getting into silly money for repairs etc..

Er, no mate. Maybe 15 years ago.
 


I knew a fella who had an Escort Cossie from new. As previously mentioned by many others, the maintainance is not cheap. He had lots of Gearbox problems and it had to be re-built on more than one occasion costing well in excess of £1k per time.

In terms of looks, performance & depreciation the cossie is much better than 182.

In terms of running costs, unwanted attention and general headaches associated with ownership its probably better sticking to a 182.

Like many cars including the ClioSport 172/182, the novelty doesnt last that long and we all think the grass is greener on the other side until we get there.

Saying all of that, Id also like to be able to say that Ive owned an Escort Cossie in my time..........
 


I have always wanted one - but like most older ford rs cars getting a good one will be hard, as most have been thrashed to death.
they are the ultimate head turner - however it comes at a price, as loads of people will want to steal it.
a mate of mines mate had an imperial blue one & some one did try to nick it (but they didnt get it)
if it were me, id get it & see how i got on, as bills will be expensive, the good thing is that you will always get back what you paid for it, whenever you sell it.
 


I would say the same as most, if you can afford it go for it..I am another one who would love to say I had owned as Esoctr Cossie..In fact I still have the original Ford brochure for the car somewhere at home from when the car came out.

Get the cossie if you want it. I dont own a clio at present but did have a cup. I know your gonna say i dont have taste but i dont aspire to owning a cossie although the zero depreciation is apealing but these kind of cars will need to be "loved" to keep at best.

Every time i see a subaru with an exhaust now im not impressed in the slightest. Doesnt matter how many sticker you put on em. Its not just cus they are so common its more they dont do anything for me. I like the evo but cant imagine buying one ever. Only car i could compare the cossie to is a mk2 v6 as in my opinion they will always look nice. Cant quite see the apeal of the cossie look or anything.

Have a drive of one before you buy as you might be disapointed. Just a thought. Didnt know so many people liked cossies. Id go for the newer car with less hasle even if it looses more money but all personal taste
