Sharing over a network problems.

Car  Fiat Panda 100hp
I have setup another PC along side the one im on now.

I have a wired router connecting them and sharing the internet.

I want to share a drive called Program Files (shown below) so I can share my programs.

Its shared on my PC, but when I try \\(computersname) from the other PC, nothing shows up, and I get a error message.

I have made sure all the usual checks like same PC name, work group etc. Anyone any ideas?

Dont think it is, my other PC has no firewall and I have Zone Alarm and that should stop it, should it

remember its \\computernameorIP\nameofshare

get the other computer ip address and see if you can ping it, ie: start run, cmd, ping 192.168.1.3 also sometimes windows is funny, you have to have the computers in the same work group,, ie home,

yeah the firewall deffo.

check zone alarm. you need to change it to trusted zone not internet zone:)

wouldnt it have to be in the same work group anyway

NTFS Permissions.

I have tried \\computername\s$ but I thought if I just put \\computername it would bring up a box with all the shared drives.

turn off zone alarm then test, i had the same problem, before i had a router with built in firewall.

Open Zonealarm, click the 'firewall' tab, click the 'add' tab and write in the ip address range.

Problem sorted.

BTW, even if you do get it working, sharing programs won't usually work.. cus' Windows is crap and usually has to have things installed on both machines.. just because of the way it works :)

On a related note,
\\ip.add.re.ss\ should work regardless of workgroup and show you all of the visible shares (c$ won't be there, for example..)

Zone Alarm is also evil.. so get rid of that rubbish :)
If you can ping, but not access SMB shares, then I'd say Zone Alarm is trying to be clever.. badly.

Ok, i tried the \\ipadress. On the 1st PC I got this, this is what I want to share.
pc1.jpg

And this is what I got on the 2nd PC. same IP but doesnt show any shared files.

Windows firewall is off, and where are these sharing services? I think there enabled thou

MAN, the computer both can't have the same IP address you dummy, the pics above say they are both .3 !!!!!! WTF, change one of them to .4 silly boy

so 1 should be 192.168.1.3 vorax, and the other one to be 192.168.1.4 silly boyeeee, and they need to be on the same subnet, and have the same gateway ip addess (probably 192.168.1.1 ? )

:lolup:I know this dummy. I was just showing that is what it is suppost to be. The box with nuthin in is suppost to have whats in the other box.

you have to check your network setting to enable / install file print and shairing, its in the network card setting details thingy.
