Short shifter, strain on the gear box?

Car  Arctic 182
So have a shifter kit and just fitted it but a friends just told me they may ruin the gear box as there fairly weak already. I haven't heard this before and he works at Renault. Will I encounter problems?

the gearboxes are not great and a short shifter just rushes the gearchange. I personally haven't fitted one for this very reason. The boxes are fragile enough as it is.

lots of people have put this on and had no problems, however it does rush the gear change so it theory it could cause damage as things dont have time to mesh.

Having just replaced the gearbox and put a gripper LSD in mine, and asked a few independent specialists about fitting a short shift, I opted not to. Although, I think Burpspeed use one, and don't seem to be going through boxes every time they race.

I thought burpspeed just run the stiffening kit without the short shift?

Ive got the "stiff shift" kit, it's awesome, no need for a quick shift at all after this, makes the gear change have a quality feel to it, worth every penny for £60

How can I get one?

Hi mate, regarding your PM; it won't damage the gearbox any more than standard. PM yanoo on here for one, i got the stiff shift 1.0 and the brass bushes.

search for DPA shift on google and you will find his website, my 182 doesn't need the stiffer ball insert or small metal bush, might be worth mentioning to save a few quid as mine got sent with those bits that I didn't need.

For my 182, it was just the housing for the ball and brass bushes: (old rubber housing in the background)

A bit fiddily at first but full instructions are given, took about an hour for me

Just to clarify things.

We, Burpspeed do not run a quick shift. It will munch your box eventually.

We just run the stiff kit (extra stiff) and it's spot on.

I thankyou.

so aim i right in thinking the only thing that makes it stiffer is the 2 steel rings around the ball? i.e. they are so tight that it becomes stiff?

I've bought a short shifter very similar to that, however mine came with no instructions and I am completley clueless as to whether to fit the shifter from beneath or from inside the car? I do not even know where to start

I bought a short shifter today fitted it to my clio 182. But only gears 3, 4 and 5 works. Does anyone have any suggestions what this could be?

Sorry, I'm asking loads of questions on different but similar threads.

It seems the later model 182 doesn't require the stiffer ball insert, or small metal bush from what I've read - is this correct?

Was the OEM design improved after a certain year or something? I have an 05 plate 182 but I don't want to spend on modified parts when it's no longer required.

So it's just the stiff shift 1.0 or 3.0 that I'd need along with a Quick Shift and Scenic shifter if I can locate one?

Thanks.
