Having never driven a 172cup or a clio for that matter beofre getting one a few weeks back does the following sound normal??

any bump or very very small kerb (like those found on drive ways) causes a large clunking and crunching noise from the front wheel area.. is this normal? or a sign that the shocks are f*cked ?

Could be a number of things most likly worn ball joints or top mounts.

Not much to fit yoursefl if it is only way to be sure it to get the wheel off and have a look.

If shocks were gone rige goes all like jelly realy.

thanks for your post edde, one thing i will add is i dont feel safe taking corners like i do in my old SAXO VTR, body rolls quite a bit, which i think is bad as the 172 cup supposed to have stiff suspension?

i need a professional to take look me thinks

Well I have read through this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constant-velocity_joint and did a few tests....

my car doesn't seem to have any problems with turning full lock on left or right, so I don't think its the CV joint.

the only way I can describe the noise is when pulling down or up onto a drive way which is very very slightly raised or even going over a speed bump, from the front right wheel area I get a high toned BOINK! I feel this is too much of a coincidence as I have also reported on these forums that I get a lot of vibration coming up through the steering wheel at 68mph and above. really couldn't drive for long at that speed without developing vibration white finger ! :(

does the above info help you guys any more on what the issue is?
