Silicone elbow fitted, well happy.

Just had my silicone elbow delivered about 30 mins ago (!!!) courtesy of Think automotive.
Well happy, it tidies the inlet up nicely and was cheap as chips at less than £20 delivered.
Only just manages to sit over the airbox lip though.
Pics:

No breather inlet as it is now vented under the car.

Yep - that was the trouble with my Hillpower elbow. The ID was okay, but it was just too short to attach to the OEM airbox.

Like your solution. I've backed off the Viper thing again - the one I bought was going to struggle to fit in the car anyway, so it's back on Ebay (new/unused).

Can you say a bit more about what you did with the crankcase breather?

^ as above, "The breather?"
The breather is the crankcase breather which runs from the back of the block under the engine cover round to the 90 degree bend of the inlet elbow.
This recirculates crank case gasses back into the inlet which takes up potential O2 space.
I have rerouted my breather underneath the car so it vents to the atmosphere.

I'll try and get a couple of pics up for you but basically the new pipe runs down the bulk head and exits at the back of the NS subframe mount. I have tried to angle the pipe towards the road so it doesn't splatter my car.

Hope your driveway isn't too new/posh ;-)

Numpty question, but did you get the longer breather pipe from a local motor factor or something? Can you remember the ID and how much you needed?

Driveway is new mate but it doesn't pile loads of crap out so it's not really a problem.
I got 2m of hose but I only ended up using used 1m. It was £5 for 2m and the internal diameter is 15mm.
I have taken a couple of pics which I'll post now.

Very poor pics.
Just to give a rough idea of routing.

And the sort of route the pipe takes out of sight.

I'll try get some better pics if you need some.

Thanks for that mate :)

Was asking where you got the pipe, because none of my local motor factors deal with hoses anymore...

I've got some hose left if you want it bud. Not sure how much I have left, it's about 1m I think.

gh172 I was puzzled to see your inlet elbow is to short to fit to the o/e air box. I cut all the hoses to the same lengths but have not had this comment from anybody else. Thats not to say I might have cut it short. If you care to contact me with your invoice number I will exchange the hose for you foc.

Nick - that's outstanding  :D

You fitted the elbow and IK for me at the beginning of last year. Like I said, when I wanted to revert to the airbox there was no way the elbow would reach so I had to refit the original. I'll dig out the invoice details tonight.

Gareth

Gareth I have sent you an e-mail regarding the hose.
To explain. The hose we send out with our IK is cut shorter than a hose we send out for fittment to a standard air box because our airbox is longer therfore needs a shorter hose.
When we send a hose out that is for fittment to another make of IK we send the hose out even longer so the customer can trim it down to the size they require.

I don't understand how the catch tank works?

I know it catches air! (or something)

Nick Hill. PM sent, I'm after one 2...

Instead of recirculating oil vapours via the inlet elbow, a pipe just dumps the stuff into a tank/bottle. You empty it periodically by hand.

Please could you post details of the part you ordered from think automotive Len beach.

http://www.thinkauto.com/index.htm found this but not sure what to get.

Thanks
Not a problem. If you PM Matt on here (username Team Think) and explain that you want a 70mm bore 90 degree elbow for your 172, like the one he sold Len_Beach if he is unsure. The part will come with equal lenght legs so one side will need cutting down but it's a small price to pay when it comes to £19.04 all in. Ask him if he can send one with the longest legs possible as mine only just reaches over the air box lip.
Cracking value though Grommit.;)

Hi mates,
I want to know the opinion regarding to install or not a filter at the end of the breather hose when you replace the OE inlet hose with the silicon one.

I have a Piper X panel filter with an uprated feed with the removal of the acoustic valve. It all depends wether you want to spend £50 on a setup like mine or £200 on a Viper. Whatever you do though, do not buy a K&N 57i style open filter as they simply draw hot air and will lose you power. They will sound good though.

Sorry to sound like an amateur, but what is the benefit of re-routing this breather hose? I re-fitted my induction kit the other day and didn't fit this hose on properly. Didn't really notice any difference in performance or anything.
Any info as to the benefit of this will be most helpful.

Cheers

For the performance you gain...which is minimal i'd rather keep the brether connected...plus if you stick it under the car...Oil on ur drive, road, tyres...messy imo.
