slow 197

hi, there i have only a few weeks ago purchased my very own clio! it is a 197 in red, looks stunning, cost enough as well. i wouldnt say im an experienced driver or anything, but i couldnt believe it when i couldnt get past this pug 106 gti down the A52!! my car just wouldnt keep up!!!
Ahhhh i felt humiliated and then to top it off some guy in a 182 flew past me as well! what am i doing wrong???? maybe i need a tune up?:lolup:

any ideas?

I doubt you'd see a big difference between a 197 and 182 (both standard) on the move, it's only a second or so to 100 which is a fair few car lengths in fairness, but a lot more down to reaction time on the road.

I bet it's got bananas in both exhausts.

Even with 5 miles it shouldn't have problems with a 106.

the gtis are pretty slow as standard, my golf kept up with it pre-remap and that was when it was 100bhp!!

Haven't come up against a GTi or 182 in the 197 yet. Wouldn't mind to have a little run now the 197 got 9.5k on the clock.

Don't worry about it. A 106 gti is a fast car and probably wasnt standard. I had a cammed & remapped vts (pretty much the same car) and I reckon it was about as fast as my 182.

Once you get your car loosened up and are more familiar with it you'll give it a beating (depending on the gtis mods)

when my car was tight with 2k on the clock (meg 225 cup) i had a play with a 56 plate 197 in red down a back private road at dusk.

the guy in the red 197 has a male passenger.

we both had new cars tight engines but fuel type / ammount ? dunno about him but i had 3/4 of a tank so not running fumes.

we both had a small section of twists in which (and im no slouch) the 197 held me up with cornering which seemed quicker to switch from left to right i had real competition they do handle superb id go as far as to say better on those types of roads and made some ground on me !


if they actually run the claimed power they would be quick. i think its down to two things 1. not run in properly 2. most arent pushing the 195bhp they claim just like the 182/172`s before it renault engines are either really strong or pretty weak.


i belive paul from RSTuning remaped one the other day with a 10bhp and 20lbft <! gain which is a massive hike for a 2.0 N/A thats already nearly at 100bhp per liter without a turbo.


... further information reveals the standard car had 179bhp and now has 192 so still 3bhp short of 195hp and not near 197bhp like some people think it means (its 197ps = 195bhp)

so if you run it in first then get a remap you should at least be at normal power lol

When i had my peugeot 206 gti, i couldn't catch mates 106 gti. Now I have the 172, seems he can't catch me!! mind you, he has just bought a highly tuned CTR.

haha just remebered that when i got beat i was doing about 55, and the other 2 cars went passed me alot faster, the best bit is, it was just outside of grantham on the average speed camera road

I had a little friendly play with a 197 on a dual carridgeway and id say there quite evenly matched to a 172/182. both stuck together when i was infront and when i let him past. I think i would prefer the 197 though just for road presence and slightly better build quality. might order or find a good second hand one next year.

I recently test drove a 197 at my local dealership. I went out with a mate of mine who works there. Was incredibly more comfortable but the performance was pants! Weather it was that it needed to be run in more or something who knows but my mate then took mine out and his reply was "wow"!
