Snapped cam follower killed my cup!

  Golf MK7,GSX-R600 L4
Right folks, bit of a long story.

Was driving home from work in my 4 year old cup on 38k and I went to overtake someone on a dual carriage way and all of a sudden I had no power at all, engine was still running up until i stopped then it wouldn't start.

Called out the RAC but had to wait in rush hour traffic pulled barely to the side of the road. had my hazzards on yet some idiots insisted on driving right up to my car before realising it was broken down!! they had plenty view as i was on an elevated section of a slip road.

Anyway police arrived to offer some protection from the traffic and eventually the RAC turned up. Told me it may of been the timing belt that had snapped but he then took off my oil cover and fished out a couple of pieces of the engine! I was gutted to say the least. Turns out the cam follower had snapped which in turn may have damaged the valves :(:(

Surely there should be some kind of warrenty from Renault Uk against component failure after less than 5 bloody years!

Booked it in to get looked at to find out the extent of the damage as they need to take the rockercover off etc .... not good:dead:

Does anyone know of anything like this happening before???

I imagine if you go to Renault and give them hell and fury over it they might pay 50% towords it or something as a "goodwill" gesture.

  Clio 182
Gutted for you mate but not uncommon . Renault cant make up there mind on the replacement intervals fot aux/cam belts as this problem kept occuring.

Although saying that i have just opened up a can of worms

I was thinking about that like, but does that mean i would have to get the work carried out @ a renault franchised garage? Probably just charge me double to make their money back!!!

Not sure buddy, tbh best bet is to just go and explain to them how angry and dissapointed you are and basically as them what there going to do about it. At the end of the day its failed before its due its first change hasnt it ? Or has it had a change?

If its had a change go straight to the place that did it.

Its the cam follower that has snapped not the cam belt/aux belt. The RAC guy reckons i could of had it services the day before and this still would of happened as it inside the engine so they wouldn't of checked it on the service ... still might give renualt uk a try like

haha nah it was my wifes car mate, does look like a golf tho! lol . I thought the cam belt had snapped to be honest as i had a complete lack of power but as the engine was still running till i stopped the RAC guy said is wasn't that.

Don't think Renault will care very much to tell the truth.

Your car is too old for them to bother, what plate is it 04??

Guy on RS has a 58 plate r26 with lets say paint issues, looks like it's going to court!

if it is indeed a follower snapped and not the belt snapped or slipped,,,, you've had a right touch.. as in theory it wont have bent valves.

hope so like mate!! at least there is a little hope!

Steve, I think the same mate.

saying that though if one of the roller rockers have snapped (what i think you are talking about) i'd have a good go at getting something out of them as it can only be a manufacturing defect
no other reason for that to happen, unless as said the timings slipped

ill buy your damaged car :D

on a more serious note, as long as the bits that have snapped havent jummed a valve open then it "shouldn't" of done any further damage

Nearly happened to mine this, my car has only done 30,000 but is 5 years old.

Just had new belt, tensioner and pulleys fitted after hearing a clacking noise coming from the engine. Turns out the tensioner had given up cost me £500.

**update**

well, just had the garage on the phone, 6 f**king cam followers have snapped off and bent the valves in the engine. He is busy taking the head off to check any further damage. I'm totally sick! This is gonna cost an arm and a leg! He is going to ring me later with an estimate on the cost of repairing ... im getting all the belts done too even though the cam belt is still in good condition!

Did you take it to Renault?

You would have been better taking it to a reputible independant garage matey.

renault love things like this as they see it as an opertunity to penetrate with there over inflated costs!

I've not taken it to renault im not that stupid lol! Its at a place in newcastle that has been recommended on here many times and i've also had other work done there. He's a renault specialist, seems genuine after my last visit (too long storey to explain lol)

with the cam and timing belt change and the engine strip down plus new valve & camfollowers i'd be content @ about a grand *fingers crossed its not more!*

You won't get a penny out of Reno.

Had a similar experience with a Reno dealer who forgot to replace a bolt on the alternator, which caused belts to go. They wouldn't pay for it.

If you have bent valves, the tops of the pistons will more than likely be damaged, which could result in bottom end rebuild too.

If so, best option is to source a second hand engine, from a breakers.

that sounds expensive!!! I'm really at a loss as to why this has happened!!! especially on only 38k!

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
The pistons normally come off ok, few tiny marks wont affect the running, (pending journals are all ok etc)

Head rebiuld would be about £250, then other parts like gasket, head bolts, new cam and AUX kit would be around £200 then the labour £500 ish.

  C63 AMG
The cam belt needs replacing either at 72k miles or every five years. Renault are likely to argue that if the car is five years old or over then they will not contribute to the cost of repair. Sad but true.

  clio 182 +cup packs
take the interior out and wheels off and go find a deep deep secluded lake mate...(that was a joke mind)
feel for ya mate..

** nasty nasty update**

Well, all 16 valves are bent, 6 x cam followers are fucked, needs a new head etc etc £1600!!!!!! im f**king sick beyond belief. Think thats the end of renault cars for me! Really really want to get on the phone to renault uk and go mental ! cars not even 5 years old ffs!

  172 cup
yer get a second hand head seen them on ebay for around the 200-300 mark, new cam belt jobs a good one.

  Golf MK7,GSX-R600 L4
does a new engine go on the log book or anything??? just thinking it may affect the selling value or something

  Leon Cupra 300
Why haven't you been on to Renault? I'm assuming it's related to the cambelt? A tensioner went on my old one but luckily the belt didn't skip so everything was fine with new belt!

If it is cambelt related, you're in their 72k 5yr period they must contribute.

the guy at the garage said he doesn't know what caused it but it must be cambelt related or component failure. I'm going to get onto renault UK because i want some contribution!!!!!!
