software to force graphics card into a specific resolution? - LCD tv

  Fabia vRS
i vaguely remember someone asking this before, but i can't find the thread.

anyway i need to force my laptop to display a 720p or 1080i resolution. I know it can support these resolutions cos when i plug my 24" monitor into it i can display them fine, but when i plug my 47" HDTV into my laptop the resolutions aren't available.

what is the name of the software that can force my graphics card to do this?

cheers.

edit :- not at home at the moment but done a bit of googling, is powerstrip the correct software for doing this?

end of teh day the tv may not display the resolution you want no matter how you try to force it

Spot on. My Toshiba 32" set doesn't do 1366(1360)x768 via VGA correctly and overscans it. Only way to get it to display correct size is to force a higher refresh rate than the screen does and watch the TV's scaler (badly) sort it out.

I gave up in the end and do 1280x768 over HDMI from the PC and it suits absolutely fine for Media Center (sic) and Blu-ray straight from the PC.

Not to others as well: be careful with Powerstrip. Didn't knack my telly but my mate killed his Samsung 32" with it.
