sold car and it blew the box :O

  182 cup
sold my 182 couple of days ago and and got a phone call next day from the guy saying the gearbox has gone.

although i feel a little bad about it, it was just pure bad luck on the guys behalf. cause its a private sale and sold as seen im covered arent i?

i did mention before that there was a noise from cv joint/driveshaft that had been there for many miles and not got worse and he was still happy to take it for price we agreed (quite cheap at 2500)

he drove it over 150 miles back home and it happened day after i sold it

just wanted to check

cheers

IIRC it's sold as seen.

Sounds like you advised him of some faults going on and price sounds pretty cheap as if there was fault!

I sold a valver once and the cam belt snapped three hours after.

Guy was cheesed but thats the way the cookie crumbles unfortunately.

The guy could have been wragging the s**t out of the box for that 150 miles, you never know.

think i just feel a touch guilty cause i told him i'd been driving round for ages and i mean 1000+ miles with the noise which we diagnosed on here as being thrust bearing or driveshaft

it wasnt getting any worse and i happily gave it a thrash on test drive and he was happy

i "think" the car still runs but makes a horrible whining noise apparently and he was getting it looked at by a garage to find out the damage.

it was just over 100k miles and had cup wheels and suspension, good nick body wise apart from bonnet (stone chips)

all i said to him was you got it cheap anyway and was prepared at that point to pay £250 + fitting for a new driveshaft when time came, so instead your paying a couple of hundred more for a new box as the the driveshaft will be fine

good point, he may have ragged it all the way back to london, that i'll never know. but with the noise that was there it sat happily on the motorway with me driving?

I wouldnt worry, these are the risks you take buying a used car.

Someone has to suffer the perils of it.

thats why its always a good idea to make up a receipt saying that the car is sold as seen and get it signed by both you and the new owner

This is a good idea, also for speed cameras and stuff.

I.e when the new owner picked it up so if theres every any confusion over when they were caught etc

  182 cup
reciept says "sold as seen" and also "road tested" and its dated and signed
he wrote it all out, seemed to know what he was doing. i assume he was a trader and had the idea of selling it straight on at 3k+

i had the same thing last week, i sold my impreza, to fund my cup iv just bought which im in love wid lol, anyway, 3days later i get a phone call saying the bonnets flown up on them on way home from buying it, 1st dodgy thing was why phone me 3 days later? and i also gave s-a-s receipt etc, spoke to someone in the know, and they said that the moment they drive the car way and out of sight with a signed receipt, they are happy with it, theres nothing they can do, unfortunate for them, but if hes a trader he'll have it right in no time, he'll have tech's and get bits at trade, so i wouldnt worry, it'll probly be up for 3.5k once repaired...

at 2.5k what does the guy expect that was stupidly cheap for a 182 !!! he may just be trying it on with you and trying to get some money back of ya , sold as seen at the end of the day ,

Cars sold as seen. Plus he got a 182 for £2.5k. For that price i'd be happy to just get one that moved atall.

FFS can't understand some people, sold as seen. Don't know why even bothered contacting you tbh, tell him you will replace the gearbox and sell it back to him for 3.5k. I Would have give you 2.5k with the broken box.

no wonder you was willing to give it away for free...
but as said, you informed him of an issue and he evidently didnt take heed, clearly had a ''il do it later'' attitude.

thats weird, my thrust bearing was whining like a ***** for about 2 weeks but got worse over that period. I think maybe the car liked you, not him!

just to get my head round this, the guy bought your 182 for 2.5k!!!!

I seriously cannot believe the cheek of him buying the car for that ridiculous price and then complaining that the gearbox went, even if you'd have sold it for a more reasonable price say 4k he is still bang out of order expecting you to do somthing about the gearbox when as everyone has been sayin is at the end of the day "sold as seen" I mean WTF!!!

  DCi 100
Lol, I'd be happy to buy a broken 172 for that sorta price if everything else was ok.

3.5k for a 182 with a rebuilt gearbox 0 miles ago, he can't really complain unless it's a dog.

yeah i was giving it away for free but a mod deleted the thread, so i took peoples advice on here and put it on ebay at no reserve listing everything up with it etc and i got a call saying someone would bring me 2500 tonight for the car. so i just said yes.

i had every intention of giving it away but i couldnt convince the moderator, my idea was the 10 selcted people would have picked a horse in national and if it won they got the car to make it fair

it was completely serious i assure you

if you go on the williams forum you'll see a few years ago i did a similar thing and gavve away loads of bits williams gearknob, powerflow exhaust, k&n filter and some other bits i cant remember

I can see where the forum is coming from though, they cant be seen to condone and/or permit gambling.

I can see your logic in it aswell though

Lols it's a shed, I seen your past post and there wasn't much right with it.

The guy should burn it out and take the 4k from the insurance company!

I don't condone this idea in anyway.

I bought a 325 e36 m3 rep years ago. Was high mileage but mint with everything m3... I drove 8 hours home in it fine. Went to get food and the gearbox went.... Just bad luck.

Tbh the 182 sounds too cheap and I would of been expecting problems!
