solid or grooved discs

rite heres the situ. im gonna bolt some 16v calipers on my rt and the plan was to fit uprated grooved 16v discs but the original 16v discs are much cheaper so are they worth the extra cost? or are the solid discs more than enough for my banger? opinions? oh yeah and how about pads? ne help much apprieciated;)

i think everyone thats fitted valver brakes say they r fine as standard! could upgrade the pads to k-tec kevlar ones or some GREEN stuff padz!

tomtom let me know how you get on as im gonna be doing the same thing over the next month or so.

Thanks

the solid discs wont work, you need the vented ones.

and a plain disc is fine, all you need.....all i run.

grooves will wear away those expensive pads in double quick time.

its only <RT which have solid disc the valver r vented and i think for performance and less wear u should go wit tomclio1.2 and go for the drilled!

thats pretty much what i thought they, wouldnt put sh*te brakes on a 140bhp hot hatch would they? i think ill get the normal 16v discs with some swanky pads greenstuff seem to be quite popular? got a quote for £80 EACH for the calipers:eek: F**K that for a game of darts im off down the scrappy! how much is a decent price? i was thinkin 1/2 that!

Dont get drilled, theyre crap!

You wont generate enough heat to make use of the cooling aid that holes give, and it just means less surface area for braking!

useless fact time. Porsche are the only manufacturers that actually cast the disc with holes in them. Everyone else drills them from a solid disc.

I found the exs valver brakes suffered quite bad fade - but then perhaps I shouldnt be slowing from a ton into bypass roundabout after bypass roundabout... [;)]

I just got new discs and pads, green stuff pads and black diamond discs, grooved ones.

Im not really bothered about the pads wearing out faster as is not much for a set of pads. I found braking imporved massivley over the standard rsi brakes. U stick your foot down (on the brakes) and where I would normally get the point where the brakes dont stop you any faster for how much you push the pedal I now find I just keep pressing the brakes and I top more quickly. Does that make any sense at all?!?!?!

Anyway, just after I changed them, after they were worn in, I was comming off a slip road and onto a round-a-bout and the lights went red. Stuck my foot on the brakes and was rather suprised, practicly had to peel my face off the wind sheild and had stopped a good few feet before the line! i was well pleased.

You shouldnt be choosing between solid and grooved, You can get solid grooved disks.

Your choices should be:

Solid or vented

Grooved, drilled, plain or grooved and drilled.

For optimum performance you should go for vented grooved.

As stated you wont make use of the drilled ones, vented will be quite sufficient.

Grooved will improve performance by removing both surface water and skimming any Smoothed (useless) compound of the pad.

If your goin for any pads, go for the kevlar ones. They dont smooth out as much and leave less brake dust all over your shiney wheels.
