Soon to be 172 owner

  RenaultSport Clio 172 Mk2

Hi everyone,

Having decided on a used Cliosport 172 as my next car Ive been looking around and have a few in mind. However, one thing thats been swaying my choice is the lots of little problems people have and the servicing.

I noticed that it needs a major service at 36000 costing a good £200-300. Im assuming its better to buy one that has already had this done to avoid the cost and also slightly higher mileage cars should have most of the problems ironed out? Are there any other major services after the 36000?

So, do you think its better to buy a more used car or does this generally lead to bigger mechanical problems sooner?

Welcome to Cliosport mate. 36,000 mile service isnt too bad. Just choose the one you want and go with the flow. Dont let an impending service put you off buying a good car.

Most of the problems you hear about on here are minor niggles - nothing to worry about. The 172 is an awesome car :D

72,000 will be the next major service after 36,000. It basically goes minor, minor, major, minor, minor, major, minor, minor, major, minor, minor, major, minor, minor, major, every 12,000 miles.

Yay - just get one, theyre great cars. Try to find one thats around a year old, then youll have two years of warranty left if there are any problems.

172s are MUCH better than those 182 things, and those hideous V6s ;)

Thanks for the replys and the welcome.

Itll deffo be a Mk2 172. Though I cant afford one only a year old. Im looking at £8k and no more if possible. Ive seen a couple around that I like and have been and looked at this - http://www.virtual-showroom.co.uk/scripts/stockList/vehicleDetail.asp?laf=SHOWROOMLNKS&dealer=8029&vehicle=1308&ss=http://www.virtual-showroom.co.uk/scripts/stockList/vehicleDetail.asp?laf=SHOWROOMLNKS&dealer=8029&vehicle=1308&ss=

Though it only has a tape player as the head unit and the drivers door isnt quite flush with the rest of the body (only a tiny amount but just noticeable. Is this down to regular use?).

I also like the look of this - http://www.renault.co.uk/RenaultSITe/pre_owned/usedCarDetails.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1023277874.1098016463@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccceadcmklegijmcfngcfkmdfkjdfml.0&BodyDisplay=Hatchback&age=3&SubmitStatus=true&onlyPromotions=false&lowerpricerange=7500&radius=300&x=100&y=16&dealerID=&MakeDisplay=Renault&mileage=30000%2b&ModelDisplay=Clio&FuelDisplay=Petrol&selectedMax=&upperpricerange=9500&advSearch=true&gearbox=M&city=&postcode=&selectedMin=&USEDCARNB=10125992&ENTITYID=82689900001&LANGID=2http://www.renault.co.uk/RenaultSITe/pre_owned/usedCarDetails.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1023277874.1098016463@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccceadcmklegijmcfngcfkmdfkjdfml.0&BodyDisplay=Hatchback&age=3&SubmitStatus=true&onlyPromotions=false&lowerpricerange=7500&radius=300&x=100&y=16&dealerID=&MakeDisplay=Renault&mileage=30000%2b&ModelDisplay=Clio&FuelDisplay=Petrol&selectedMax=&upperpricerange=9500&advSearch=true&gearbox=M&city=&postcode=&selectedMin=&USEDCARNB=10125992&ENTITYID=82689900001&LANGID=2 and

and this - http://www.photoads.co.uk/page-21446.htmlhttp://www.photoads.co.uk/page-21446.html .

Though living in the Midlands means its a long drive to look at them both.

P.S Have you seen the Silver Mk2 on ebay that looks very tasty and has 17s and stainless exhaust on it. Probably be out of my price range though with all the mods on it

Was there not a 6 disk CD Changer under one of the front seats?

Reason I ask cos when I got my 172 I thought it was a tape only. It wasnt until i dropped my wallet under the drivers seat that I found a black box with Alpine on it

I think so yeah (didnt know where it was as it was the first one I looked at ) but I thought the CD Head unit came as standard. Or is it an option only?

The one in Brighton in the photads link in my first post going for £7400 is an import. They apparently have no alarm installed just the Cat1 immobiliser, and an extra owner on the V5 due to the importer holding it for a few days.
