Sourcing a 172 with FSH,C/B Change etc

  172 Cup
Hi, I'm currently on the lookout for a 172 preferably cup. With a budget of around 3-3.5k i've been searching autotrader for a few weeks and the majority of the adverts are a disgrace TBH.

Yes there's MOT & TAX but out of about 20 cars there's only 2 that state that the belts have been changed and a handful that confirm full service history.

I've been checking the classifieds regularly also.

*Out of interest is approx £3k budget enough for a decent P2 172?

*Should the majority of 172's i've been looking at with 60k+ miles have had the belts changed?

*I've owned 2 306 Rallye's in the past, A Gti-6,Saxo Vts, An 8L S3,Golf 1.8t Gti (mk4), Fabia vrs etc and wandered how the clio would compare?

Also i'm just looking for cheap & fun motoring for possibly a couple of years until the financial situation picks up. I'm also considering a 306 Gti6/Rallye again but finding a "good one" can be few and far between.

Cheers

All 172's should of had their belts done by now and I noticed when buying mine last year the majority on Autotrader hadn't been done. I did look at a couple of ones from garages that had milage as low as 16k that hadn't had their belts done and they will generally just refuse to accept that the belts needed to be done as it was 5 yrs old. People just don't want to fork out for getting it done when they probably just go to Renault/a local garage and are told it will be 600-700 quid. It's not worth the risk unless you can knock £400 off the price to cover the cost and drop it into a specialist on the way home from picking it up.

I found that cars on Pistonheads generally had the belts done and usually better looked after cars. You will also probably find that cars for sale on here will be cheaper than elsewhere.

I paid £3.8k last september for 172, FRSH, 38k miles from Pistonheads so you should be able to get something similar for around 3.2k - 3.5k now.

Hi

All 172's should have had thier belts done. Either 5 years or 75k, so they are due on age. 3.5k+ should get you a decent one, 4k should get an excellent low milage (under 60k) one.

Bang for buck they are ace! Step up interms of build from the 106's (had a GTI). I've had x2 Cups and a 182, and imo the Cup is the one to go for :)

even if they've had their belts done they may have been done wrong, look out for specialist history or main dealer history regarding the belts

"steve's garage belt change" - run

Also might be worth driving a few. With a bad cambelt change the timing can be off, and it could lose a good chunk of power, which seems common on here :)

There are many 172's out there for sale and I would have thought your budget would be enough, you just have to be patient and make the effort to travel some distances to find the right one.

The 172's are not a cheap car to run, insurance and mpg will be as expensive as your S3 but the Fun factor, yes it has that.

I got my 172 about 3 months ago... Was up for £4k, got it for £3.5k

Was on 43,000 miles (on a 52 plate), almost Full Renault Service History. Cambelt Done. Sat Nav optional extra...
Tbh, the ad for the car was pretty dire, not much info given, but I gave it a chance and came out with a pretty much mint car for its age!
Id enquire about all the ones that look half decent... I think in the month and a half that I was looking for one, I must have sent out about 40 emails to people enquiring about them etc. Just a case of waiting for the right one to come along.

Whaat? So S3's do a good 32+mpg?

Lol

Mid-20's? :s

Im getting 37 driving to work, 24 miles, all A and B roads, no dual carriageways and about 15 mins of traffic at end of journey.

All 172s should have had them done by now but I bought mine in Jan, the dealer said oh yeh its been done but I had a feeling it hadnt, it hadnt lol. Unless they can show you a receipt I would assume its not been done.

Costs like £300 though to get done. I think your budget needs to be £3.5 for a normal one, £4k for a mint one

Thanks for the replies!

*Edd - Hmmm! Looks a cracking example of a P1, must admit the wheels are a tad marmite but they don't make no difference as long as the cars in good nick!

You're only round the corner from me in waky, defo worth a visit...even more so if it has a years MOT on it! :approve:

Tempting..? definately!, I'm sure the pics dont do it justice. I'd rather spend around my budget on a mint P1 than a average condition p2 i guess.

Cheers

Well you are more than welcome to view it. I know what you mean about the wheels, I might try and get hold of another set, think it would probably help the sale.
