Can anyone tell me what spacers are used for??? Ive read something about hubcentric spacers but cant really work out what there for. At a guess i would say there used to give the car a wider track so it handles better?? Being that the 172 cup has a wider track than a normal 172 would i be right in thinking that these spacers are a cheap way to give your car a wider stance??

Clio Sport 172
Example. My new alloys wheels needed spacers as they wouldn't clear the calliper. They do make the car that slightly bit wider

this is my 1000 post woop woop lol
ive got two 10mm spacers (one on each side lol) on the back
makes the wheel base 2cm weider and stops my wheels from rubbing.
you simple put a spacer on the back of your wheels and bolt
the wheel on as normal. the spacer would push the wheel out.
i got 2 10mm if you fancy buying a set

is 2cm a noticable difference
so for arguments sake, if i put 20mm spacers on the 4 corners of my 02 172, will it give my car a wider track of 4cm?? and if so will it make the car handle slightly better as its wider. something tells me that no it wont but has anyone tried or tested this theory?? also if i did this would i have to redo the tracking on my car or anything

@ Tigger ; find out for example the ET of the Cup Turinis. Compare this to your 172 FF wheels and the diffrence will tell you which spacer is neccescary to get the 172 Cup wide track.
Mind you ; you can'nt just throw on some spacers to your liking + go 2cm wider on each side. (well you could but..) The design of the car has taken account with the ET of the standard wheels, or the other way round.
Going too wide will put more stress on the bearings/hubs/etc.. and it will not handle better . It's possible but do'nt expect a nice/reliable drive..
The 182 for example has the bigger hubs, and to make up the difference the wheels have a ET to bring them back in some more, or so i was told by my Reno specialist..
I'm no expert but i have always tried to get the exact ET of the car design when getting new aftermarket wheels

anyway, best is to stay within the perimeters of the design.. sure people with spacers will say it's okay, i would too if i had them on the car

wheel-suspension setup is very important.. I've seen (on german tv) the worst accident ,filmed by victims friends on their handy, this was a Golf with Euro style wheels (stretched tyres and all) , the car just went from under him at very high speed trying to race a Porsche on the autobahn. Suspension-tyre-wheel setup probably cost him his life

Aim for a et 38 offset aka Cup offset. That imo is the best for a Clio Sport being the widest track available factory stock
Not sure what your wheel offset is just now but say its a et43, a 5 mm spacer will get you et38
EG:
et43 plus 5mm spacer = offset of 38 (43 - 5 = 38)

as above,
ET30 on a 8" rim, ET20 on the front, may swap them round as i have coilovers on now
