Spin out at 30 mph...

B

Bucko

Span my car doing about 30mph in the rain at 3am this morning :(

I was on my way back from Plymouth with the missus and 2 of her mates in the back so was taking it easy but that didn't seem to matter. It was almost like the road was an ice rink, no control at all once the back end came around.

Ended up in the hedge backwards after giving the kerb/grass bank a good bash.

Gutted!

I'm not sure yet cus it was proper dark. The front bumper and under tray were hanging off, both the near side wheels took a good knock so there cud be suspension probs, the oil light was on when i started it for the recovery bloke (so i turned it off straight away!), the radiator has been moved but no water leaked.

I'm sure i'll find out during the week when the insurance company sort the estimate out.

We were all fine, just a little shook up. Cheers

As for oil on the road, that's what it felt like but it was more likely to be the shite tyres on the back (previous owner) and the leaves on the road. Maybe having the weight of 2 girls in the back caught me out too cus i never usually take passengers in the back

Thats a kick in the cajones, again no one hurt so somthing fortunate.

Cant even be carefull enough!

Bucko

Yeah, i'm quite proud of the fact that i was being cautious due to the weather. People will assume i was driving like a CTR owner though which is annoying

Why does everyone on here slate the CTR owners lol

Is there some sort of bad driving cult in England for Honder owners or what?

B

Bucko

Honda owners are either pensioners or complete tools...no offence to any CTR owners on here lol

fair enough, funny in scotland there isnt a specific type of bad driver, just a vast array of fukcing arse pirates in anything from fiestas to corsas to BMW's...

Anyway, back on subject, if you ever plan on having an accident then i don't recommend the early hours of sunday morning to do it. So much hassel and now i don't have a car for work 2moro!

gutted for you mate, it happened to me aswell and i binned it into a wall, you will get over it in time matey, insurnace job?

B

Bucko

Yep it's an insurance job, my excess is £350 but i'm sure it'll be worth it, especially considering that th AA would've charged me £105 to recover it, just because it was in an accident. It would be free if it was just broken down...gits.

I just can't wait to get the estimate through so i know what the damage is

rear dampers shot? mine were gone and i lost the back end at 25mph on a wet roundabout, lucky because i was going slow by the time it slid round i was only doing about 5-10mph so managed to catch it but had never felt a car lose control so easy, chcked both dampers and they had both emptyed their selfs of oil!

Leaves on the road lol

Maybe your car has got spinning Clio syndrone? You know the usual - no driver error at all, but yet another mechanical failure

Cheers.

Must have been more that just oil on the road to loose it at 30... maybe rear shocks and tyres as already said...

Maybe you've damaged the sump when you bounced up the curb if the oil light came on straight after... could you see any pouring out under the engine bay?

Glad all was ok mate.

Can be very nasty at that kinna speed.
I did pretty much exactly the same thing as you on a roundabout in the wet, wasn't even raining, just a very damp surface.

Was in the lane 1 taking it slightly quick, at about the same speed as you and the back end just stepped out, tried to catch it, luckily missed the car to the left of me and just ended up doing a 360 and nestled gently to a halt in the middle of the roundabout itself, up the soft kerb. Everyone reacted well, stopped to let me out then off I went again.

No damage whatsoever, just some mud up the left front and left rear tyres. I was a tad luckier than you unfortunately but learnt my lesson.

Put it down to turning in while going to quickly on a roundabout, even with just two of us in the car, and also my rear tyres were the cheapest I could get at the time, that's the last time I ever go for budget tyres ;)

I don't want to lecture you mate, but new/best tyres on the back, can help to prevent this, it's easier to control understeer than oversteer.

Still gutting though.

Definately down to the crappy tyres and extra weight in the back.

Almost trashed my old 106 in a similar situation as I had some form of £18 ditchfinders on the back wheels and two 13 stone mates sat in the rear. Back end just stepped out going round a roundabout at about 25 but luckily I manged to power out of it (mainly due to it being a 3 laned roundabout). Scared the willies out of me though.

Have never had cheap tyres on the back since.

Just lucky your all ok mate, thats what insurance is for i guess?!

s**t scared of my car in the wet, only had a little bit of lift off oversteer on a roundabout but it was a weird sensation! ive got micheline pilot tyres and they seem pretty good in the wet, what tyres you have on the back? my old 1.2 was like a duck on ice with my £20 a corner "wanli" tyres, NEVER again!

^^ It's not too bad to correct in the ph1 as its got no stability control you just need to go against your instink's and blip the throttle and the back end tucks in quite nicely. Best thing to do though is not go in quick enough to have to lift off!!

il have to get some track time to try that safely.

i dont drive my car that hard, the sheer thrill of the drive is amazing! i love the phase 1, its soo raw and simple. what a car should be, no pointless electrics, and nannying electronic controls.

i know im a bit biased as i own one but i genuinly prefer the drive of the phase 1, than the ph2 i test drove(first 172 id driven).

if i was offered a straight swap for a mint phase 2 full fat id keep my ph1 everytime!

Scared? You want to get yourself to a track day in the pissing rain matey boy and see what happens when the back end does step out, atleast when it spits you off you know what to expect and/or how to correct it:rasp:
