Spray painting help required! :-)

  Ultra Red Clio 197
Hi,

Im thinking of buying this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300170405715

I want to colour code my car.. I have already done the exterior door strips which look fantastic (my first time spray painting!!) But I want to do the bumpers and door handles and maybe spoiler too..

I did the door strips using just aerosol cans or plastic primer, Black 676 paint and clear lacquer.. that I got from Auto-paint.co.uk. This was expensive buying these so im thinking of buying the above starter set and then buying primer, paint and lacquer in tins then adding thinners etc..

Would this compressor set be suitable for occasional use? and would the one spray gun supplied be suitable or should I buy another 2 guns for primer, lacquer etc? or can the one supplied just be washed befre eac different product is put into it?

What have other people done? whats your opinions please?

Cheers
Ross ;)

i doubt it would have enough air to spray a spoiler.

might be ok for 2 quick passes for sidestrips.

ideally you want 3 guns, primer, basecoat and laquer

but you can get away with 2, 1 for primering, 1 for painting (basecoat/laquer) just keep them clean

as above
would be easier if ya bought a couple more guns prob, they range from £15 up wards really dependin on the quality of the nibs get them from ya local motorworld/ motor maina maybe halfords????
or try ebay of course lol
its a alright set to start off with :)

thanks for the advice guys.. The only reason im looking at this is because rattle cans are expensive to keep buying. IF Only they could be made larger than 400mls!! longer lasting and more affordable.. lol.. I agree the finish they give is good. Now im thinking its going to cost me more to buy this equipment than to carry on buying rattle cans!

It took me three 400ml cans of paint to do my exterior door trims, 2 plastic primer and 2 lacquer, does this seem right or am I doing something wrong to use this much? Or is that about right?

What quantities of primer, paint and lacquer do peeps think I would need to do the plastic strip on the front bumper?

cheers
Ross

sounds like way too much paint

i only used 2 cans to spray 4 door strips, a spoiler and 2 fog surrounds with 3 cans of laquer

woops!! It was my first time doing anything like it, and I did it out in the garden with a sheet down, totally unprofessional!! lol.. I dont think the wind helped to use the paint as effectively as I would have hoped so alot was maybe wasted from being blown away before hitting the surface of the item I was painting!

I have side skirts coming next week, but decided not to paint them myself so in exchange for 2 fleeces embroidered with the business name compliments of my dad.. I have a guy at a body repair place doing them! so its kinda a swop!

Painting is quite a skill and this is what the genral public dont seem to realize when they take a car to a body shop. Its a long process and takes a long time to get good at it, like people above have said probabley ok for doing moldings but not ideal for larger panels but a good way to start learning.

  FOR SALE!!!
you only need a godo 2-3 layers of colour then the rest down to lauquer only good thing bout that kit is if you could get ya hand on some 2k laquer you would get a very good finshes on all ya stuff

sideskirts am pretty easy to aerosol ,anything small or long is usually easy, but, as always, its best to just get them sprayed with a gun, just so much easier.

as for the wind, yea, youd be wasting most of the paint into the air, try always paint in doors if possible like in a shed or something

Dont take this the wrong way but I would love to see you do a blend down the side of a car, if it was so easy i would not have a job. I have been in the trade since the age of fourteen and i still learn new stuff all the time and even with my time served some things can give you a headache.
