I'm mulling over a new laptop or swapping out for a SSD it's been a while since I've been bothered about laptops but in day's of old a SSD had limited storage circa 64Gb now I'm seeing 256Gb drive's I was under the impression it wasn't advisable to store/fill media photos videos on SSD has this changed ?

I quite like the idea of a surface pro 6 I don't game just for browsing backups nothing taxing unless you have any thoughts

Nothing wrong with storing media files on an SSD, been doing it for years.

The Samsung 850/860's are good SSD's.

As above very small chance of data loss these days, unless your going to leave them unused for many years.

HDDs are for servers these days. And even then solid state server drives are becoming more affordable.

That spec should be more than enough for browsing and stuff. The SSD will speed things up.

Massively.

SSD is the best bang per buck mod you can make to an older laptop, by a big margin.

I only use Samsung drives after a few failed SSD's from other brands.

They're fine for data storage, I've a 500gb for storage (games) and a 120gb M.2 for a boot drive. Pretty perfect setup imo.

Yeh as above, SSD can transform an old machine.
My Win PC has an SSD system drive so it boots nice a quickly then 3 mechanical HDDs for storing all the media, but only because 10TB of SSD is still a bit pricey.

To me that sounds like it's got a hybrid drive which cache parts of the system on a small solid state chip to boost speed that's the theroy of them but they still not as good as a SSD drive that's what I've been lead to understand

I have a Sandisk SSD in one of my PC's and it's been fine. Should be ok for what you need it for.

The Samsungs are probably about the best you can get IMO.

Only thing with an SSD is don't fill it to the brim. Performance drops off a cliff after a certain point of utilisation on the newer SSDs especially.

You couldn't the 8gb flash storage is built into the 1tb hdd(SSHD)

Slap a Samsung SSD in it and enjoy the laptop for a good while longer. I stuck one in my missus’s old first gen i3 laptop and it’s perfectly good for the usual browsing etc.

As you’ve probably already noticed I don’t know a lot about hardware, but I’m guessing that 8gb is meant for the operating system, so it starts up faster etc?

The 860 is speaking to me but my tightness says no it's almost a quarter of what the laptop cost in 2013 although its still a fraction of what a surface would cost [emoji23]

One 500gb 860 Evo ordered locally from novatech & they also confirmed that the laptop doesn't have a M.2 slot [emoji41]

fitted it i wasn't to convinced if it was worth it

its benchmarking around 250-280mb for read & writes but it does seem to be more usable ?

bumping my own question ive old hp laptop which may benefit from a ssd its got remote access to sites printers and other items programs & a user who couldn't deal with a fresh setup & its hassle id like to avoid would cloning carry everything over seamlessly
