SSD

I'm mulling over a new laptop or swapping out for a SSD it's been a while since I've been bothered about laptops but in day's of old a SSD had limited storage circa 64Gb now I'm seeing 256Gb drive's I was under the impression it wasn't advisable to store/fill media photos videos on SSD has this changed ?

I quite like the idea of a surface pro 6 I don't game just for browsing backups nothing taxing unless you have any thoughts

Nothing wrong with storing media files on an SSD, been doing it for years.

The Samsung 850/860's are good SSD's.

As above very small chance of data loss these days, unless your going to leave them unused for many years.

My original OCZ from about 10 years ago is still going strong.

Paid well over £100 for a 90GB back then ?

Fair enough SSD's have fallen in price since I last looked is a 5 year old i5 3210 8gb laptop really going to benefit from the upgrade

That spec should be more than enough for browsing and stuff. The SSD will speed things up.

I only use Samsung drives after a few failed SSD's from other brands.

They're fine for data storage, I've a 500gb for storage (games) and a 120gb M.2 for a boot drive. Pretty perfect setup imo.

Yeh as above, SSD can transform an old machine.
My Win PC has an SSD system drive so it boots nice a quickly then 3 mechanical HDDs for storing all the media, but only because 10TB of SSD is still a bit pricey.

I’ve just bought this laptop https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B018K0B370/?tag=cliospnet01-21 (bought used off eBay but that link has all the info). Could I simply pull out the SSD drive and plug in a bigger one? Is it worth bothering? What’s the difference between SSD and SSHD?
To me that sounds like it's got a hybrid drive which cache parts of the system on a small solid state chip to boost speed that's the theroy of them but they still not as good as a SSD drive that's what I've been lead to understand

No reason why you couldn't upgrade it

Or maybe leave that drive alone and replace the HDD?

Thanks I'm going to give a SSD a whirl

Anything about which brand to go with I usually rate SanDisk for SD cards

This Samsung worth the extra ?

Samsung MZ-76E500B/EU 500 GB 860 EVO Sata III 64L V NAND Solid State Drive https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B078WQT6S6/?tag=cliospnet01-21

Fitting is it just plug & play like a conventional HDD.
I have a Sandisk SSD in one of my PC's and it's been fine. Should be ok for what you need it for.

The Samsungs are probably about the best you can get IMO.

Also worth pointing out if your laptop has an M2 socket you can put a stick style SSD in and keep the original HD as storage.

Slap a Samsung SSD in it and enjoy the laptop for a good while longer. I stuck one in my missus’s old first gen i3 laptop and it’s perfectly good for the usual browsing etc.

Am I still right to think a fresh start would be better then cloning is my win 10 licence going to throw a hissy fit ?

Yes hybrid HDD are supposedly best of both worlds but in reality 8gb isn't really sufficient to cache enough to help you
As you’ve probably already noticed I don’t know a lot about hardware, but I’m guessing that 8gb is meant for the operating system, so it starts up faster etc?

P.s sorry for jumping on your thread
It's alright surposedly it's ment to allocate this for thing's that you frequently open

https://www.itechtics.com/hdd-vs-ssd-vs-sshd-one-best/ Although the price difference between a SSD & SSHD isn't a big factor anymore

I'm no expert the only thing that has changed in the year's ive been mulling is no one really sings the praise of SSHD the storage of a SSD has increased & the price has fallen to a tempting price

On paper your laptop sounds quite fast already

Yeah I had a shock the other night when I looked SSD prices and the size of the drives. (Compared to when I first heard about them a few years ago).

Samsung EVO drives, if you're on a budget.

I use ~100 per year, rarely have a problem.

And please please please don't buy a hybrid drive, they're a pile of shite.
The 860 is speaking to me but my tightness says no it's almost a quarter of what the laptop cost in 2013 although its still a fraction of what a surface would cost

Worth every penny, and when you replace the laptop, take it with you. :)

Actually I've got an 850 EVO 250GB that's only had very light use, I'd happily sell it to you?

  Clio MK4 TCE 120
fitted it i wasn't to convinced if it was worth it

its benchmarking around 250-280mb for read & writes but it does seem to be more usable ?
