are the writings painted or engraved in to the insert ?
is the rest of the knob covered in leather or just plastic ?

Depends on the insert, but you can get engraved inserts, or if someone has sanded over and painted it, smooth ones.

What that left hand switch for? Next to the dial light dimmer thing, where you would find t/c cc switches on a newer model.
