Hi all, thought I'd move my progress to here from my intro post. Haven't had much time with Christmas round the corner.. and definitely a fair weather mechanic haha.

Wheels have been refurbished + new tyres, brakes all round ready to fit.. appears to need a drive shaft too and ill be doing the cambelt, water pump, dephaser and a service before its MOT and I actually start driving it.. hope to have lots of updates over
the new few months.

Well it’s been slow progress so far on my 172 cup project I’m back on it so also here to give this thread another try.. All my other projects are all in hand so why not start another! Ha.

With the help of a working copy of Renault Dialogsys and some lockdown spending on new tools I’m hoping to make some good progress finally!!

So far I have ready to fit.. All new genuine parts: Full service kit, cambelt kit, water pump, dephaser etc. Front discs and pads have been done, new rears discs and pads to fit and then to sort out the worn/sticky plastic interior trim and a general clean as it’s in a bit of a sorry state being in storage.

I’m still undecided whether or not to pull the whole car apart and do a full resto build or just pull it apart and do a turbo conversion.. what do you all reckon!?

Here’s the car at the moment but hope to have some updates in the coming weeks.

It looked mint till i see the last picture 😂

Perfect time to clean it up that ones probably to nice to rip apart best of with a resto project read on Insta it's a 1 owner car with 80k and history 😉
Best to sell it and buy something cheaper that you don't mind ripping apart

😂 It's only a bit of dust I'll get it cleaned up and it'll be gleaming once again!! haha. Yes I think I am swinging towards a resto project, it does only have 1 previous owner with all Renault dealer service history. I wish it only had 80K... but its on around 115k I think. Strange thing is that it has air conditioning so I'm not really sure if thats a positive or a negative when it comes to its value!?

No idea about the air con I'm new to renaults
Try and find out if it was a factory install might make it even rarer Who knows 😂

Standard engine and enjoy it. You’ll regret ripping it apart and having an unreliable/expensive turbo build. Or it’ll get broken and split for parts half way through the build.

Standard engine is the best way to enjoy these...!

Good info! I think the car deserves to be put back to how it should be from factory, so I'm going to start hunting for parts and start fixing it up! (y)

Just don’t go OTT and lose sight.. do the bare minimum to get it through an MOT and road worthy. Then at least you can enjoy the car through the stages of improvement. You’ll feel the car has value if you have use of it.

Standard ish woth decent suspension is the way forward with these. The stock ride looks awful.

Ok thats good to know I won't bother investing in some new cup suspension then! What suspension would you suggest as a replacement?

B14s here.
Cup shocks with eibach/grams/cooksport will do. What ever is trending at the mo.

Yeah I'm sure they would do they job but from the looks of them and the pictures there.. I'll add them to the list! :) (y)

Today was a good day!! I finally made some progress!! I managed to get the cup out of the storage unit that has been its home for the last 2 years and made a start on getting it cleaned up! A good wash sorted the barn find layer of dust then it was on to the interior.. which I may have got a little OCD with it.. lol. Still waiting for the parts car to arrive from Copart so I can tackle some of the sticky plastic and swap the top part of the dash over and lots of other worn interior parts I’m hoping!

Ictually forgot to take pictures of the outside after I washed it! Doh!… haha. Hopefully have some more updates/pictures to follow after another day on it tomorrow.

Here it is:

Found a little bit of rust in the rear quarters and on the edge of the wheel arch behind the rear cards so I’ll have to get someone to tackle that at some point:

Parts car was so cheap I couldn't turn it down £240 for a 36,000 mile 2006 1.2 Clio with what I am hoping will lots of lovely interior bits I can use and rear lights, headlight etc etc!

Todays update..

Stripped out the rest of the interior to clean up the carpets and in preparation for swapping some of the bits over from the parts car. Seats will be off to a local valeting company so they can bring them back to life. Tomorrow task is to clean up all the interior plastics ready to refit.. then attack the front end to give myself some room to replace the alternator and start the cambelt etc etc.

Cheers mate! I’ve been following how well you’ve been getting on with yours so thought I better get cracking and get mine restored as well! [emoji23].

Yes I’m hoping to, I’ve got some good Renault workshop manuals and Renault software that’s got all the info I need! Also hoping one of my mechanic friends will have the locking tools I can borrow so I don’t have to buy them lol.

Another hard day at it today, let’s see how we get on [emoji1303]

Very short update for today as the day ran away with itself! I only managed to get a couple of hours working on the car so with this in mind I thought I'd finish at the back and clean up behind the rear lights and rear bumper..

Cheers mate! I can feel myself getting carried away with this resto thing.. I just want to clean or replace anything thats worn or dirty... This is going to be a bad thing for my wallet 😂😂😂.

With so many clios being broken just buy quality used parts they are so cheap

Unless your going concourse then you better get a credit card to go in your wallet too 😂😂😂

This week I decided the engine is coming out, really want to get the engine bay all cleaned up and back to being factory fresh again so with the engine out I can paint the block and easily do all the service work I need to do… not a lot of room in these engine bays is there!! Also will be taking the gearbox to a specialist to have it refreshed and throw a new clutch in when I put it all back together :).

I picked up the engine crane today so will have some more updates next week! (y)

No messing about 😂

It is the best way it's going to be so easy doing the belt alone with it out it makes sense

Another productive day on the car, crane was ready to go this morning and out the engine came… have to say was quite a job doing it by myself missed having my mates to lend a hand!!

Split the engine and gearbox ready to take to the gearbox specialist tomorrow... Engine will be going onto an engine stand so I can clean it all up nicely but the muppets on ebay forgot to send the wheels out with it!!

Can anyone recommend a good degreaser to clean up the engine and the subframe please?

Also with the engine being out, anything that is a must to change that I might have missed!?

Some before and after pictures of the engine bay after attacking it with the pressure washer, surprised how well it came up!
