steering clonk noise..

right guys, figure this one out, when i turn my wheel the car makes a loud snap/clonk/tap noise... steering feels kinda heavy too.. what can it be?

thanks

Steering Rack is cracked, need to get that replaced.. Could be about £150 or more for part and fitting, garages pick up the part for about £80 so whatever they mark-up and the labour charge i guess..

Really though i would not drive much , i would definately not do above 70mph or so commonly, as it is now it can crack completely at any time especially on a hard turn and you can career straight off the road into the lorry coming the other way or brick walls or whatnot..

Get it changed asap.

Mine also makes this noise, but the rack itself looks fine. When I changed the front pads a wee while ago, the noise stopped for a few days, then came back, but it only happens when trying to maneouvre at v.low speeds. (There's no noise at all over 5mph!)

yeah same here when am just like parking or something, making full turn its makes that horrid cracking noise which is really annoying..

not sure which model you've got and how it might be different to a 172 Cup, but i had a similar sounding problem (at either lock only) and suspect that it was the column to rack clamp bolt - it was slightly bent and had lost one of its threads

no idea how this might have happened and should imagine the chances of it also being what's affecting yours are v slim - but may be worth a look before you go to the expense of a new rack

thanks make, yeah it makes the noises just before it locks or when you turn more than half way,.. steering gets kind of heavy when it reaches that point then clunk and makes them awful noises.. il have it inspected though... however it doesnt make that noise when the wheels are off the ground....

i have a an MK2 ph3 (facelift) btw

edit: how can i look at the rack? is it directly underneath? do i need to take anything off to get to it? thanks

mine wouldn't do it without weight on the wheels either. also, it wouldn't do it on very smooth surfaces (eg. on a ramp or a garage floor) - which made diagnosing where it was coming from impossible

it came of to have the PAS seals renewed and that's when i noticed that this bolt was bent. it also went back on with new mounting bushes - the only two things it could have been (in my case) were this clamp bolt or the mounting bushes

access is easy enough if you want to take a look at it (although not sure you'll be able to diagnose anything from doing so) - it's at the back of the subframe underneath the car.

also, unless you're working on it yourself, be prepared for some fairly big labour charges, as they're awkward to work on (i'm assuming yours is hydraulic)

jesus sounds like a mountain of work.... have you eventually got it fixed? how much did it all costs? am a student at the minute and i really cant afford high labour... will just fitting a new subframe be better?

no need to worry about the subframe - just the rack and its associated bits

mine's fine now and probably cost about £200 to sort - it primarily needed doing as it was leaking PAS fluid - the 'cracking' noise was fixed co-incidentally.

the rack cost £125 to 'recondition' (the track rods were fine - which is another potential cause of your noise) and i did the job myself (5 hour job according to the 'book' - took me far longer). the rest of the cash was for bits and bobs - the mounting bushes are £40/set and the rubber boot which protects the lower column universal joint was another £40 (.. look after yours!)

i'd take it to an independent specialist first, to get a solid diagnosis of what's wrong before you consider your next step. feel free to PM me if you'd ever like any advice about it
