Steering Play

  Renault Megane R26
I have a Clio RSI '97 and it has a lot of play in the wheel, Its just had new wishbones put on and still not a lot of difference, However the track rod ends have some pla in them can this be the cause??

Could well be the track rod ends, they can cause play.

Also check your steering column though. At the base of the column just ehind the pedals there is a black rubber gaitor, lift that up and you will see a universal joint where the column joins with the rack. Turn the steering wheel and see if there is any play there first. Its a common fault and you can either get it welded up cheaply or bung a new column in.

How do I go about getting it welded and what am I lookin for?? How much would a new part be??

You could take it to a garage to get it welded, but you might have trouble with finding someone willing to weld it in situ as its in a fairly awkward place and the risk of setting fire to your carpet is relatively high.

That is the bit that needs welding.

What i did was to buy a second hand column from winston, one which it was known had no play, and fitted that, cost me well under £50. Its not that difficult to change over a steering column, the pinch bolt at the bottom is a pain in the arse though.

Firstly though mate, check that it is definately the column and not the track rod ends as both can cause play.

Yea it is the steering rack thanks for the help. I've stuck some nails in the gaps for the time being sounds dodgy I know.

Winston????

do u know anything bout water leaking from the light, I've put tape around the outside of the sunroof and its seemed to stop. any advice??

Its a clio, if they dont leak from the sunroof at somepoint then theres something wrong with it. They tend to leak from the bit underneath the black plastic where it joins with the roof. Take your headlining out and undo the bolts - i think from memory there are 16 of then, the whole sunroof will lift out once youve undone the motor, then you can re-seal where it sits with some silicone and bolt the thing all back down again.

If yoy cant be bothered with that and dont mind it looking a bit s**t from the outside, just get some clear waterproof silicone and run it round the outside of the sunroof.

If its coming through the interior light it could well be leaking from the ariel - same thing, just run some clear silicone round the edge and get a nice tight seal.
