still gearbox mount trouble

  Monaco 172 + mk1 RSi
Beginning to go crazy now, got my new upper gear box mount bolt today, came to fit it and it doesnt fit  someone help me:mad:

The bolt looks the same and the nut fits, the threads in the aluminuium bracket look good enough, and even if they where buggered it wouldnt fall through so easiy, the bolt is a millimetre or two to small in diametre for the gear box bracket :dead:

now what?

is this the bolt that goes straight through the middle of the upper gearbox mount and has a nut on the bottom of it?

  Monaco 172 + mk1 RSi
I didn't think there was a nut on the bottom of it, I thought the bracket was threaded :/

Yes, the upper gearbox mount, it's like a threaded bar with a collet around half way.

Thanks Jamie

that threaded bar just drops through the middle of the mount and has a nut on the bottom. not much access though. i worked through the arch to get the nut onto the bolt, then from the top you almost lay the spanner on the gearbox at the same angle as the radiator (ie at 0 degrees) and you should be able to slide the spanner onto the bolt and tighten it up. failing that, take the weight of the gearbox with a jack, undo the three bolts that hold the mount to the gearbox (like a tripod) and a couple of other bolts on the body then remove the whole mount complete with bracket, tighten the nut and bolt up with it out the car, then bolt the complete bracket back into the car.

Take the 18mm nut off and just knock the bar downwards gently. Remove the two 13mm nuts and lift it off. Replace. Easy.

I did mine on my Ph1 172 last Friday. It is very simple if the nut on top will come off - mine wouldn't because it was fitted by Arnie so I had to take the whole damm mounting bracket off (it is 3 16mm long bolts fitted to the gearbox, about 5 10mm bolts that hold all the various cables in place and four 13mm bolts that hold the frame to the body) it all lifts away out of the engine but be careful you don't damage the ECU. Once it is off you can separate it by removing the two 13 mm nuts and the 18mm big nut on top and hit it downwards. On mine I had to cut the old mount off with a hacksaw as the top nut was not budging (you can remove it by locking the bottom nut with another nut if you have one!). If the nut does come off then just tap the top of the bar downwards with some wood (to avoid damaging the alluminium frame!) it will just drop down - but don't force it. This bar should drop down and the new mount can be fitted if it all goes well. Don't try to fit the bracket back on the car with the mount on it, fit it first and then fit the mount after - because fitting the three long bolts into the gearbox was not easy (you can get to the back one by putting a really long socket extension at the back of the ECU to get on the bolt). Don't overtighten the bolts either as they are not very strong and will strip. Enjoy, took me 5 flippin hours.

isn't the nut on top a bolt, not a nut? either way it never budges for me either, i just go with the nut on the bottom. although from reading your post it sounds like the bolt was pushed up from the bottom and the nut on top, rather than the bolt pushed down from the top and the nut on the bottom.

about the ecu being in the way- if the bracket is off the car, won't the ecu be out of the way and it'll be easier to do those three 16mm long bolts up with the mount already in situ?

i will say that mine was all put back together during the gearbox replacement so it was all already off the car anyway, but it took me about 20mins to bolt the mount onto the bracket and fit the whole thing back into the car.

either way, the op now has two ways to do it :)

Might be my explaining that's bad, I have no troubble getting it off, it's all currently off, but the tripod frame that bolts to the gearbox seems to be damaged, the threaded bar that goes through the mount will no longer thread into the tripod bracket on the gear box, in a previous post someone said there was a nut on the bottom but there was none on mine and the tripod bracket has threads on it :/ the threads are gooses though

not sure if its different for a phase 1 but on the phase 2 there is a nut on the other end of that bolt. while it's all off, can you line up the bolt with the mount, should tell you whether theres enough bolt sticking out the other side to get a nut on.

But there will be like a milimetre play around the threads in the bracket, being cast aluminum a pretty soft metal won't it just rub it and wear away the metal, thus snapping another bolt :/ I can't get my head round the play/gap which is threaded :/

Sorry I have not, Renault just gave me a nut and said the bracket was fine :/ so I've bolted it all back up and it seems fine, I'm still not happy but only time will tell

that bit isn't threaded, the "pin bolt" goes through it and is held on with an 18mm nut

As KP said, there should be two 18mm nuts on the 'pin bolt' - there are on my Ph1 172. You can buy a new bolt and new nuts from Renault. If the tripod is damaged you can buy a new one from Renault or from someone like Cliospares second hand (in fact he'll also be able to sell you the pin bolt, too if required).

I only removed the bottom two 10mm bolts on the ECU, I didn't fancy disturbing that part more than I had to.

Cheers

Thanks for the help everyone, also Fred thanks for the specific info, really helps, when mine snapped the bottom bolt fell out therefore I never new there was one and the tripod bracket looked threaded, all sorted now with parts from Renault
£20 for the pin bolt
And £2.something for a nut :)

Also one of the two 13mm bolts on the bush is a pain and I lost one bolt trying to get it in lol so just been and baught a bolt so the battery and stuff has to come off again lol

Thanks Jamie
