Stolen Laptop

  PH1 172
House got broken into on Friday and along with other stuff, my laptop got stolen and my g/f's bro's PS3 :(

Want to know if there is anything I can do to trace these or at least get the laptop cancelled in some way? I have tried ringing Microsoft and they are useless and Dell have flagged it on their system as stolen and that's it......

Don't think you can do bugger all. I wouldnt have thought you can cancel it as there is nothing to cancel!
They will probably flag the serial number.

Luckly it was only a month old so nothing but pictures that I backed up on my external HDD thank god!!

So there is no way of tracing laptop if it were to be connected online?

Nope, nothing. Ive now built all my laptops with Bitlocker, and they will only boot when I insert my USB stick which contains my key. Im not worried about the hardware as it can be replaced, but wouldnt want anyone getting hold of any of my data...

Maybe if the dumb asses use the PS3 online that can be located and lead you to your laptop ect?

That sounds like a good idea and something I may look into when I get the laptop replaced but what happens if you lost your USB stick?

On the dell laptops, they have the computrace module in them for this reason. It sends out a ping to a server giving ip information which can be used to trace it...however, you must have paid absolute to monitor it for you when you purchased it..but, there is always next time...

My computer was password protected so will they just wipe it clean and start fresh or will they be able to get to my documents etc by putting the HDD into another computer/laptop?

Fook!! I didn't know and wasn't told this when I purchased it otherwise I would have 100% paid out for that :(

Yeah seems pretty simple tbh for companies to just lock the computer if it's stolen and then connected to the net.

Although the problem there is once it's second hand you could phone up and get it locked even tho you don't own it! :S

Aye, then you'd have to get a V5 for it flol.

Anyway whoever steals a laptop then uses the same OS without reformatting is an absolute moron.

Update:

Who can help me locate an address? I have found that my laptop had software on it to track it as mentioned above and have now found information e.g. ip address, mac address, internet provider etc of where/when it is being used.........can anybody help me out? Police are doing my fooking nut in and are not being very helpful even though I have basically given them the address of where these people are but nope I have to wait to speak to the officer that's dealing with it...and that was from yesterday afternoon and again this morning!!!!!!
