stop light on dash and engine wont start..help!

  Radical SR3
Not having any luck with my 172 cup so far! Tonight driving home, heard a bang from the engine then clicking noise. Stop and battery light on dash. The car won't start now just makes a clicking sound when you turn the key. Cambelt was done at rentech only 3 days ago...any ideas?

Yup :(

AA man checked it over, suspects the belt has gone and taken the engine with it. It's on its way to Ren-tech tomorrow for them to look at...I'm hoping they are honest and put it right, only owned the car for a week and the cambelt was the first thing I've had done.

Will call them tomorrow morning and let you all know what they come up with, what a pain in the arse, I just transferred insurance from a Golf R32 and SORN'd it also to save a few quid until I sold the damn thing...tomorrow will have to sort that out to drive it while the Clio is away.

The AA man got me to turn it over with the oil cap off and watched as the cam just sat there.

Not the greatest start to Renault ownership is it? :)

Afternoon all,

Ren-tech called me this morning early after receiving the car. They've spent the day stripping it down to see what has happened. I should find out more on Monday when Mike looks at it but it's a valve job for sure and one of the cams looks in a bad way.

They have also said they will cover all labour no question, but may ask me to pay towards the parts...again I'll find out more about this Monday.

The odd thing is that the cambelt was still intact? they said a follower from the inlet side had come away and gone under the cam on the exhaust side...they also think the head has been off at some point in the past, possibly oil starvation? and the timing was out when they did the belt at the weekend.

Anyone got any thoughts on that lot? I know very little about this car and the history is sketchy from 50k to 69k

  Nothing at the mo :(
Ok 1 point

Rentech without a shadow of a doubt will not rip you off. From the sounds of it the cambelt was fine and the rest of the car has failed.. and rentech are even offering to pay to fit all the new parts for free

Whatever they will say be truth not bullshit i can guarantee you that

Nobody is suggesting Ren-tech aren't honest. Truth be told I have no idea whether something they have done has caused this failure if the belt is in place and hasn't skipped/slipped.

If they tell me on Monday there's something untoward with it, I'll be contacting the seller.

just trying to reassure you. it's the one thing i worry about when something goes wrong is how reasonable is the garage.

reputations carry a lot of weight..their service and response so far has been spot on. Roll on monday. If the exhaust cam is shagged I might look at getting some aftermarket cams...then again, this car stands me at 900 over the cost of it so far and I've only had it a week. It's cost more so far than our other cars combined :(

I can honestly say that I cant prove either way if It was something I have cockedc up or not(remember I have done hundreds of these belts), have been off for this week but poped in to drop some tools of to be informed the one I done monday has come back.
Was worried I had cocked up, but told by my new bloke everything was tight pulley wise, so in his opinion I hadnt cocked up.
But considering its only done a few hundred miles, Im more than happy to lose labour costs, i said to Dave tell the customer I'm more than happy to fix the the engine at no labour costs,BUT I insist the de-phaser pulley must be changed at customers cost as advised a few days ago.
I cant say if I have cocked up or not because I honestly dont know, the last place that done the cambelt before you purchased car made a total mess of it, so much so that wrong oil seal was used for the inlet cam and it pissed all the oil out.
I would be the first person to admit if I had cocked up I would pay for it, but I really cant say.
So I offer free labour and parts at cost.

Call you monday mike? Again, your approach to this is spot on.

I wish the belt had gone, would have been simpler in my eyes. No idea where the fault lies.

Unlucky for me the car seems to be a little below par and requires more money to fix..luckily though it's with you to see it right.

I doubt the belt had gone that mike done.. he did my old 182 and that was spot on

If the car was in a right state when mike got it from the previous garage then it might of just been a ticking time bomb waiting to explode
