Strange Engine Problem

gsb

  98 Sreg Clio RT
Hi,

Had my 1.4 S reg Clio for a few years now with very little problem, but this one is really annoying and strange!

Start up, all is ok, drive to work about 10 miles away still ok, 8 hours later start it up and drive home fine.

However if i stop somewhere along the route when i start it up again it sounds like a tractor and has no power, like its misfireing or something. If I then leave it a few hours its back to normal again. If i drive through it I annoys people behind (going 15 miles an hour) for a while but it kicks back in. (this also starts to happen if i pull over but don't turn the engine off).

My dad is not a mechanic but has a pretty good idea about these things and has looked at it and tryed a few things but nothing...

Any suggestions of things to try?

Thanks!

sound like a pencil coil to me. get it misfiring then lift the ignition coils off one by one (dont just disconnect them) which ever one is doing nothing that is your problem. about 45 quid plus vat from reno

I've just picked up a T'reg Clio which has done the same to me twice, Suspected one of the coil packs to be playing up so disconnected the connection on each coil pack and swapped them over (and swapped the ignition leads to the other coil packs so they would fire correctly) and the problemy disappeared... so swapped it all back and it still worked!!

Drove home and stopped at petrol station and the bloody thing was firing on 2 cyl again!! left it for 10 mins and all was ok.

only thing i have noticed, there is a single cable that runs to a sensor? thats bolted just above the coil packs - the cable had melted as it was pushed down onto the rocker cover.

other than that i re routed the ignition leads to tidy them up as one was resting on the manifold! :(

Since then touch wood no problems.
