Strange network problem

I've noticed something about the new build that's bugging me slightly. My Local Area Connection seems capped at around 500K/s. Using the laptop connected wirelessly to the same router I am maxing out the 10mb pipe at about 1.2Mb/s WTF is going on?

BTW I'm basing this on my usenet speeds and my speeds over Steam to download all my games (I didnt back 'em up) IN any given example I seem to be downloading about twice as fast on the laptop :S

Would you happen to have a netgear router/switch and a gigabit adapter on your new PC?

Roy is your LAN connection from your new build PC wired ? If so is the network card hard set to 100Mb full duplex or set to auto-auto
I'd make sure your running the latest motherboard chipset drivers (assuming your NIC is part of the motherboard) and set to 100-Full
Also in the control panel network connection go to your LAN connection - Properties - Configure - Advanced and set Optimize for throughout (NOT CPU) this is where to set 100-Full too, also turn off power management here too

It's wired. Just tried your suggestion but it's still capped :dead:

what router do you have. Chances are its a 100mbit switch but has a 10mbit port for wan which causes you to not get the download speed due to TCP overheads.

Or are you saying the wireless is giving you full speeds ?

I'll try those suggestions in a minute (if I can find where to edit them)

The router is a cheapo Belkin, but it was fine with the old games PC which is in the same spot as this one, and using the same cable. Initially it wouldnt connect at all, but that was because I had to enter the MAC address into the router for MAC filtering.

The wired PC downloads at less than half the speed of the wireless laptop. My mobo is actually wireless, so I might install the driver for that and see how it performs. I didnt really want to connect the games machine wirelessly though, as there's no real need because I already have my RJ45 right next it.

Thanks for the help so far :)

 What a spanner

It was because I'd upgraded to Newsbin Pro 5 on the new machine, and the number of connections for my server was defaulted at 2. I've set it to the max 10 connections and I'm downloading at 9.4Mb :approve:

The Steam thing must have been a limitation with their servers :)

Thanks for all your help anyway dudes.
