Strut Brace

I have just recently purchased a strut brace, second hand. I thought that strut braces were attached to the struts by the bolt that holds the shocks in place.

I now know that this is not always the case. For instance the strut brace that I have requires three holes drilled into the strut its self.

Will drilling these holes in the strut make it weaker?

Any idea what size bolts I should use?
(Im guessing that too long and they would hit the shock and too short and they would eventually bend the hole open and fall out)

no decent strut braces bolt onto the strut top nut, it wouldnt do anything for shell rigidity otherwise.
